Big Block, tall valve covers and a heater? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know some of these series trucks came with big blocks. From what I have read you may have to either beat your firewall out or move the motor forward for the tall valve covers. Will the heater box be an issue with tall valve covers?

My dad's '69 has a 454 w/stock valve covers and the passenger valve cover has plenty of room around the heater box, so I wouldn't see why tall valve covers won't fit.

Here's a picture I found with tall valve covers. looks like plenty of room to me...

I have a big block with tall valve covers in my 68 I have no clearance issues by the heater box or my firewall. I could see having clearance problems only if you are using the 6 cylinder mounting holes

By 6 cylinder mounting holes I assume you mean the rear two correct?

yes you are correct, this is the only pic i have at the moment the truck is in storage for the winter if you are looking for something specific let me know i can go to were it is stored and take some more

no its a long water pump setup, i would of prefered the short due to the crank pulley being very close to the crossmember

The trucks in the pics on this thread all have no power brakes. Imthink you my have a clearance issue with a BB truck that has the stock 11 inch brake booster. Ive been wanting a set of Edelbrock Elite valve covers and I believe they are 5 1/2 inches high and I've measured and dont have that much clearance from the stock pb booster on my truck.

Not sure exactly how tall these valve covers are, but there aren't stock and you can see the lack or room between the driver side cover and the booster.

Tight fit on my old 72 but they did fit.

On a factory BB with AC the alt (on the drivers side) is a real p.i.a. with the stock brackets and tall covers but they are only required with a roller valve train.

I have also seem some bbc have alternator bracket interference with stock valve covers.

I installed my motor and tranny in my 72 with factory a/c and power brakes. It was a huge PITA but it does fit. If you have power brakes, I would suggest dismounting the booster for the install.
