Finally got a question for you.

Power steering pump......makes noise and leaks......I want to remove it and go manual steering for now until I track down a replacement...will the power steering gearbox be OK without fluid running thru it? Do I leave the inlet/outlet lines open on the gear box or find a way to cap them off....? BTW...I thank all of you for your replies and gold nuggets of wisdom on my intro/ "I KNOW NOTHING thread.....Later.

I don't think it would be hard to find a replacement. Just go to your local auto parts store and get one....

Re: Finally got a question for you.

PLEASE!!!for everyones safety and for all things bowtie do not cap off the ports in the steering box. Can you say hydrolock boys and girls? that thing may seem fine for a little while then start the feeling of getting a little tight then you go to make a turn and BAM locked up sterring box, the pressure will bilud and the fluid will be forced into one side of the box no place else to go and no turn for you. It is a sick feeling. And I did it to a drag car, fortunately I was lucky[ cause I can't be that smart] to figure it out and slowed way down [long shutdown area] and then started working the wheel back the opposite way from that I needed to turn and then that made a suction enough to get me off the return road to open a port. I then drilled a hole in the return side of the plug in the box and put a nipple on it and a hose with a breather similar to the ones found on the rear ends of the newer trucks. It worked perfect. But in that case I did not have a steering box I am sure the ones for a non steering truck 67-72 are not hard to find [cause I got 2or 3 laying around]

Re: Finally got a question for you.

You can buy just the pump without the housing/reservoir from your local auto parts store. It'll set ya back about $30 bucks. Then you remove your pump from your housing/reservoir and install the new pump into it.

Best part is, that you retain all the mounts, and hose locations on your original housing/reservoir.

It's a pretty straight forward EZPZ job.
