'67 steering wheel/column questions
Has anyone bought one of those aftermarket tilt columns before? I am looking at an ad in Golden State PU parts for a steel column for 259$. Are they any good, will they bolt right up to my '67, and will my steering wheel from my '67 fit on the shaft? The ad says that it will take '69 or newer GM steering wheels, what's the difference between my '67 and a '69 wheel, besides the looks, is the shaft spline count different. One more question. I am sanding down my original '67 steering wheel and am going to fill in the cracks and repaint it...what are those old steering wheels made out of? How much of that black dust can I inhale before I choke to death?

The 67/68 wheel is identical to the 69-up wheel in terms of "bolt-on" compatibility. Those guys at GSPP probably indicated 69-up because they do not know a whole lot about the vehicles they sell products for. I suggest before buying from GSPP you contact a board member that goes by the name PICKMUP. Click on Members button and you can e-mail him. He carrys a similar product and actually builds these pickups. He can probably answer all your questions.
Sanding your wheel will be no more harmfull than any other part. Wear a respirator when in doubt.

The reason they say 69 and up isn't because of the steering wheel. The steering wheel will go on with out any problems. The difference in the 67-68 steering columns are a single piece column all the way down to the rag joint on your steering gear. The 69-72 columns have an intermediate shaft that slips over a short spline shaft at the base of the column housing. The intermediate shaft then bolts to your steering gear. If you get an intermediate shaft the column will work fine for you. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I had thought of that too Wes but dismissed it because of the specific reference to "wheel". Glad you clarified that. Why would they not be more specific with the details? Guess it gets back to the fact they don't know Jack about what they sell. As you can tell I'm no fan of GSPP.

It is easier to sell something for the exact aplication than it is to explain what it will fit with the right parts. LOL WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com
