New Hood to Cowl Seal/Raised Hood - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know there are several threads on this but I just installed a new cowl seal and stainless trash guards. I know some say to try new hinges and springs but I press down on the back of the hood when it's closed with all my weight and it still doesn't go flush. Will new hood hinges and springs really be strong enough to hold it down or make a difference? I tried adjusting the hood hinges but it make's no difference. It doesn't help I got the POS LMC cowl seal.....

So should I just try to get a new seal from a vendor (Classic HeartBeat) or try new hood hinges/springs???

Your hood to cowl seal should be a V shaped seal not L shaped. Rock auto has the correct seal for our trucks.

Mine did the same thing, I just took it off. I can't see any real need for it anyway, unless it does something I haven't thought of?

You can bring the back of the hood down by adjusting the hinges. Open the hood, loosen the hinge bolts that attach to the fenders. Then, push the hood further up to rotate the hinges back. Tighten the bolts, keeping the hinges in that position (it is easier to do this with two people, so you can hold the setting) Close the hood carefully...you will see that this "pulls" the back of the hood down when shut. If you over adjust, the hood will scrape the cowl, or go down too far past the cowl. If you play with this adjustment, you can dial it in.

X2. Had same issue with mine. Need to take time to adjust hinges. Be patient and get the help of someone.

I tried to adjust mine as you describe with no luck, I'm thinking my hinges or springs are worn out. Would that be the problem? I don't see and wear but can't really test the springs.

I noticed the brace the on the hood where the hinges mount flexes a lot while opening and closing the hood, I wonder if the brace has bent over the years? My 72 hood fits flush, that's without the seal, my 69 sticks up in the back without the seal. The hinges in my 69 don't seem to have any play and the springs seem strong when opening the hood. I have the hinges all the way down as well. When I repaint the 69 I'm going to try to mess with the brace and see if I can get the hood to seat.

When it's cold out, try relaxing the seal with a heat gun. This works for door seals too.

Adjustment is first option of course. But elongated rivets in the hinge can cause this also n very hard to see. Using the correct seal then the adjustment on the hinge is the first two steps.

It is to help prevent engine compartment fumes from entering the cabin air intake plenum.

I think this is a common problem on these trucks. My hinges are adjusted as far as they go and are solid pieces, the seal is NOS so the only cure on my truck is to elongate the holes in the hinges.....someday, but its ok for now.
