How long is your dipstick?

I have a first generation 350 with a stock pan. When I change the oil it shows that I'm overfilling when I put in five quarts of oil. I'm thinking the dipstick is too long and not giving an accurate reading.

Your thoughts?

Re: How long is your dipstick?

I believe the stock GM dipstick is 6" long from the shoulder (where it meets the block) to the full line, and 7" from the shoulder to the empty line. I went through this because I have a 7-quart pan on my 383 stroker and checked it out when I changed over to the large pan size.

Re: How long is your dipstick?

Everytime I put 5 full quarts in after an oil & filter change, it would read over the full mark. That's been the case with every stock SB Chevy motor I've had.

Now I put in 4.5 quarts and the level reads between the marks. After I burn/leak a little, then I add that leftover 1/2 quart.

5 full quarts probably came from the old days of punch top oil cans, you poured it all in. Probably doesn't hurt anyting. With the plastic re-sealable jugs today, just use the amount needed.

Cool Re: How long is your dipstick?

My 305 will read over full until I crank it up and run it to get the oil filter full. Most of the time though I fill the filter up before I install it then crank it.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Thanks. This should help. I'll do some measuring in the morning.

Kind of reminds me of that old joke about two guys standing on the river bank taking a leak. First guys says "man, that water's cold." Second guy responds: "Yep, and it's deep too!"

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Re: How long is your dipstick?

The size of the oil filter also makes a differance. There are long and short versions of oil filters. The long filter will give you the correct oil level on the dipstick.

Good Point.

I liked to use the old PF35, even on my cars. Holds a couple extra swigs of oil. Some of the new filters today are quite stubby.
