Cable driven speedometer

With the stock engine in our trucks is it a cable drive speedometer? And until how recently were cable driven speedometers used? The reason I am asking is because I found a cruise control unit that I want to install in my truck http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...prod/prd46.htm and for a couple years I am going to run the original engine in my truck and then I plan on doing an engine swap to a 12v diesel. But I want to buy a cruise unit that works with both engines. And I just want to know if this would work?

Re: Cable driven speedometer

I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box but the engine has nothing to do with the speedo, it's installed into the tranny.

Re: Cable driven speedometer

^^ What he said.... the speedo cable drive comes from the transmission so that unit should work for you. Also, it has the option, if needed, to use driveshaft magnets for speed sensing.

And by the way I wasn't trying to sound like a jerk. It's just my dry as the Sahara desert sense of humor.

Re: Cable driven speedometer

Chevy didn't start using an electronic speedo on the trucks until 1990
