My California DMV experience

Well I have made it a habit before I start a project that I take care of the DMV transfer. I took a gamble on my new 1976 short bed because it had some back fees on it. It is a complete and straight truck. I went in and waited in line and when I spoke to the lady behing the counter I asked if she could check the history on the title I had and if DMV could wave some of the fees. Sure enough after a few minutes and a conversation with the supervisor my fees were reduced by 66%! WOW good gamble. Any way I thought I would post this and let people know that sometimes it never hurts to just ask.

Thanks,

Matt

Wow, a positive tale involving the DMV. What a rarity. Maybe there's hope for us all. BTW good score on your truck.

Good deal next time schedule an appt. online with the DMV and you'll be in and out in a flash, do this all the time and get the ugliest faces from people waiting in line

Re: My California DMV experience

Thanks xrcr,

Malo83, I tried to make an appt. but it was two weeks out and I work a stones throw from my local office. I had some work to do any way so I sat there and did it while I was waiting. If I had more time to wait I would definatly make an appt. next time around.

Out side of the wait the Cali DMV is not so bad. I had a lady let me change a date so I had no late fee!

Calif DMV has awalys been cool going all the way back when "pink slips" really were pink. Now Nevada, thats a whole different story.

cory d, Yeah I am going to try and keep the well aged look. After seeing the blue j thread I couldn't help my self when I saw this truck. Not trying to copy Yezzi's truck, but cool is cool. Static drop on rally's and hopfully an LS motor.

Re: My California DMV experience

hey, just a question, what are the dmv fees, and how did you get them reduced. are there other charges?

We just have registration fees, my old 77 with full insurance, million liability, and $100 deductable is around $500 a year We need to do a vehicle saftey inspection before it is registered, but once its done you are good to go, no more inspections...

Just curious on the difference

I went by the DMV the other day, and there was a sign taped to the locked door that said, "At Bud's funeral--be back after noon." Small town--square body.

Thats funny, (sort of,with repect to Bud).

DMV fees, in my case, for California are the result of not putting the vehicle in non-op and letting the paper work go cold. The fees accumulate and become a monster that people dont want to deal with. We do not have any inspections other than a smog inspection, unless your are coming out of salvage or junk title then a brake and lamp inspection is needed.

Re: My California DMV experience

Honestly its unfortunate that you even need to go in and hagle over the back fees for a truck that has not been registered to drive. When you really think about it, why should you pay back fees on something that was not even driven on the roads in california? In California you have to pay the back fees so you can be issued a title and new registration when a title and registration should be considered two seperate things. When you buy a vehicle you should only have to do a title transfer then register it to be driven on the roads. They just made you feel like they did you a favor when they actually just made you pay for someone elses registration fees. The truth is they cut a deal with you because they wanted to get some of the back registration over you saying to hell with it I will part it out like a lot of people end up doing. Either way I like the find you made I am only saying you should have been able to put that money in to parts for your truck instead of paying fees for registration on a truck that you didnt own at the time and fees to drive on california roads that didnt even drive on california roads. I know this because I found my truck the same way as you and had to go cut the same deal with the DMV in california just so I could get a title and take it out of state.

Re: My California DMV experience

That's absolutely disgusting that they try to make you pay for the years that it wasn't registered. Is it free to put it on non operational status or do they charge for that too?

Re: My California DMV experience

Sounds like a perfect way to stick it to the people who don't understand the twisted ways of the government. "What?! I gotta pay $20 to let my truck sit? No way, lets go get an 18 pack instead!"

Re: My California DMV experience

Sounds fairly stupid to me.... If i don't want to pay insurance we can just let it run out, and no big deal. Then just Renue when you wanna drive it. Or you can put layup, it gives you full coverage but you cannot drive it. But honestly who drives a lowered over cammed truck in the winter

Re: My California DMV experience

raws67, I agree with you its is a shame that I had to wast my fix up money on back fees for atruck that hasnt been on the road for along time. But It was also why I got the truck for such a low price. Oh well I just wanted to let other know that it is possible to get back fees reduced.

Re: My California DMV experience

Is that non-op a one time deal till the next time it's registered, or is that yearly?

All this remind me of how it is here in Texas if you let your registration or inspection go out of date and the vehicle is in the street or visible from the street. Every city is a little different, but if someone takes notice the tow threats start coming. They want those fees, or they want to impound and auction it off.

Re: My California DMV experience

Its a one time fee. They send you a notice every year that if you want to register it for the road you need to pay otherwise just let it ride.

Yeah same thing with my buddy... they did the same discount... we have the same year truck, but my renewal fee was 114 and his 160.

Re: My California DMV experience

In Virginia "Title" and "Registration" are 2 different things. You can get the vehicle titled in your name without buying tags, tags may be purchased later or not at all. If you purchase tags you must insure the vehicle. If the vehicle is going to be parked (not used) and you want to drop the insurance, the tags must be surrendered asap to any DMV office. DMV will refund the unused portion on the tags.

I pay roughly 50 bucks a year for tag renewal including the personalized plate fee.

Re: My California DMV experience

So what does the tag allow you to do? whats it for? we have our license plates, then insurance, you can buy basic or up graded insurance which gives you a lower deductible, and more coverage mine with really good insurance costs roughly $500 a year...
