Ignition lock removal 1973 GMC
Hey all,
Trying to remove my ignition lock cylinder and having an issue. I read another great thread on how to do this but I am missing either common sense or a step that wasn't shown. From my understanding, there is a torx screw on the other side of this housing, but for the life of me, I can't get to it. I have enough play in the wiring to the turn signal piece, but it will not pull out any further. I think it is due to the piece on the top of the steering column shown in the pictures. Please see attached pics Working on a 1973 GMC C2500 w/automatic tranny Thanks guys for any suggestions Spline64 |

This is the wrong forum but I can answer your question befoe you go any farther. The cover you're removing on the tilt bolt it back on.They didn't use the bolt to hold the lock cyl till later years. On yours you use a flat screw driver and push on A tab, you'll seeit about half way back on the cyl in a slot push and pull it out

Re: Ignition lock removal 1973 GMC
Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry for the wrong forum. Can a moderator please re-direct this post?
I know of the slot you are talking about but when I push a flat screwdriver in there and turn to on position, it still does not come out. When I turned the ignition when it broke, it basically made a "snap" sound then rotated freely. It was very tight / difficult to turn before that. Am I trying to fix the wrong problem? The lock position still works. btw, I do not have a tilt steering. Thanks, Spline64 Last edited by Spline64; 03-02-2013 at 06:36 PM. |

Re: Ignition lock removal 1973 GMC
No problem glad to help out, make sure you lube the linkage with some pent oil. If its still stiff check the actual ign switch down on the column

Re: Ignition lock removal 1973 GMC
I'm having the same problem with my buddy"s '73 K/5 with non tilt, the ign cyl won't come out. Which slot/hole do you go in to push the release? I can't tell if I'm hitting the release. It seems like something else is holding it from sliding out, this thing is really messed up and the bezel keeps sliding off so I'm having a hard time getting any kind of grip. How did you get the broken cyl out? Any help is appreciated.
