Pic of charcoal canister
Just wondering if anyone has any pictures of the charcoal canister on these trucks? I have a 71 but the canister is missing. I've never seen a truck with one before.

Would you mind trying something for me? I read somewhere that if they don't rattle when you shake them they aren't any good. Do both of yours rattle when you shake them? Something about the charcoal being all clumped together or something in the old used ones... Thanks. LockDoc

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
It's mounted on the passenger side radiator support to fender brace. In the picture you can see the two holes on the bracket. If you don't mind waiting until tomorrow I can get you a picture of a mounted one although its fairly hard to see since it mounts between the battery and the fender.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
Is this part really necessary or can you do without it?
I have 72 K5 and it doesn't require to be smog checks. I started pulling everything out because I'm putting in a fresh motor in so I'm starting to put together a parts list for replacing fuel and brakes lines with stainless steel. I'd rather not use it if you don't need. Plus it's one less stainless steel fuel line I would need to buy

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
One of my '71 K10's canisters had been removed by a PO and it ran fine but I noticed fuel odor every time I was under the hood. It was then that I realized that it was missing and put one in and the odor was gone.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
They started putting them on half tons in 1971. It was part of the smog stuff they started putting on.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
I'm going to install a universal tank onto the rear of my truck. The tank will require a vent line. Can I add a charcoal canister in the rear of my truck? What are you guys doing with with your rear tanks?

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
Not sure what the part number on that box is but here is a GM part number for 1972 is 7030541. Standard Products part number is CP1045. I have not had any luck finding either of these. Every now and again the CP1045 shows up on fleabay for mid $200s.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
Hmmm.. the rattle thing is interesting. I went out this morning and tried it and sure enough the new one rattles and I couldn't hear anything on the old one. The part number on the new one is GM#17063011 and ACD#215-12.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
It seems vehicles sold in California were ahead of other states requiring emission equipment. I lived there for about 30 years and dreaded having a vehicle smog checked if it was required.
We moved away from California in 1996. Here in Missouri where we live there are no smog checks required, but there is a safety check required every two years.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
I wonder if you could open the old one and replace the charcoal media?
