Newbie looking for advice on a n

Generally a mustang and camaro guy, but I'm wanting a truck to drive to Home Depot on weekends and piddle around with. looking for something with a classic look in muted colorscheme, not hot rodded. I have two I like, one a 72 swb Cheyenne, 350 with 4 speed manual, one a 69 camper special 3/4 ton long bed with a 396 and automatic transmission.

I generally prefer an automatic, not sure how much I'd spend to swap the manual for an automatic.

Is the 3/4 ton going to be a harsher ride or less friendly around town? I know the shorties are generally more desirable, but what's the difference in ride?

Any thoughts or advice between these two, or other guidance, will be greatly appreciated!

These rigs were built when trucks were trucks. They all ride about he same. The coil spring/trailing arm trucks seem to have better road manners than leaf sprung trucks.

Pretty expensive rigs just to haul plants and 2X4's from Home Depot. They are both nice trucks. But way too rich for my blood to give an answer on which one.

the 3/4 will be a stiffer ride IF it has rear leafs - and that is a common option in a Custom Camper (or a 3/4 ton, for that matter). It will get a little worse mileage than the small block truck by nature of it's 396 and the extra weight it's draggin around.

Depends what you want to do - if runnin to home depot and actually buying something big or heavy, and often, the 3/4 ton is a better option (or at least a long wheelbase truck is perhaps better option). If you're gonna show it, maybe short wheel base is in your sights more.

I'm biased (see my avatar, it's a 71 3/4 custom camper) but I do love the swb hot rod as well.

Having said that - I think both are over-priced (not much, but a bit). Between the two, the 3/4 ton is overpriced moreso than the 1/2 ton swb. Again, only my opinion.

If I were you - I'd decide what type of truck you want first - swb vs lwb / 1/2 vs 3/4 ton / trim levels you like, etc - and THEN narrow your search. Sounds like right now you are just trying to decide between two (very cool) trucks - and you might find later on that you prefer one type over another, even though both are nice.

If you want a "truck" more than a "hot rod" - then the custom camper is a good bet. Having said that, the 1/2 ton swb can easily carry, oh, about 3/4 as much as the lwb 3/4 tonner... Decisions, decisions.

And welcome to the site. We won't hold that Mustang thing against you as long as you always say Camaro in the same sentence...

I personally would say go with the SWB. If you decide to do anything else with it in the future, you will love the work, if you decide after getting it down the road you want to sell...........you will have more luck getting better money out of a SWB

WOW i agree with the over priced part on both. To your question...........its all about your preference. Do you want the sporty look of the SWB of the TRUCK look of the 3/4? Either way will be fun I say.

P.S. Id take Lowes over Home Depot anyday

Yep...this site has some fine trucks for sale.

Im a bit bias on 3/4 ton long beds, just my thing.
All depends on how much heavy stuff you'll be movin.
The 72 will have front disk brakes.
