Stained Wood Bed Pics

Can some of you guys post some pics of yalls wood beds? I'm trying to decide what stain would look best.

I have the Bruce Horkey "Show Deck" wood bed kit. It's Carolina Ash with 2 coats of Minwax medium Oak stain and 4 coats of Marine Spar Varnish.
The Show Deck fits over your steel bed and, in my ever so humble opinion, was worth every penny.

now just trying to figure out the best way to coat it.

Love the stock original look

I use the bed and this is a driver.
so it will get scratched and dirty and sit out in the rain...

Blackish or dark gray look...Flat look
or just nothing and let weather??

Two coats of exterior house paint. It's been on there for almost four years with no problems.

Ive never taken a wood bed out of the truck before.. Can I just remove my entire old wood floor by removing the 8 big main bolts? Is that all thats holding it to the frame? After taking out the main bolts, I would assume it would just lift out and fall apart? I need to remove my old original floor and raise everything up to clear the new suspension.

here's the red oak in my kids truck.
I think we did 2 coats of ebony stain rubbed out with steel wool between each coat and 3-4 coats of spar with a rubbing in between each coat.

so far so good its been outside for well over a year and with a quick wipe it still looks great its holding up good

Use Linseed Oil or Danish Oil. I have Red Oak in my truck and coat it once or twice a year with a quick coat (although you need to put on more coats initially as it soaks it in). You don't have to worry about scratching the varnish with this method.

A few thoughts for installing the boards. On the back side cut some grooves between 1/4 and 1/2 inch deep the length of the board. I was told that this will help with cracking over time. When installing the boards I found it helpful to have my box standing on end, therefore I was not laying on the ground. I also used a small ratchet strap to keep the boards snug as I worked at installing them across the bed.

I purchased my red oak from Bruce too. I finished it myself ( about the ONLY thing I did during the restoration of my 70 C-10 ) I made some "extensions" for my saw horses and did the work in my basement. After rounding off all the edges, I block sanded all sides with three different grades of sandpaper, down to a very fine sheet. I used two coats of Old Masters Dark Walnut stain, finished with six coats of Old Masters Marine Spar Varnish - Satin finish ( lightly sanding in between all coats ). This process lasted about three months because it took a week ( or two ) for each coat of varnish to dry. The wood was installed with the bed off the truck, hanging from a lift. The guy who did the installation said it worked real well.

The first picture below, shows the raw wood right from the shipping box.

The second picture shows the difference between one coat of stain ( on the left ) and the third coat of varnish on the same board.

The third picture shows the wood after the sixth coat of varnish.

The fourth picture shows the wood being installed with the bed hanging from the lift.

The fifth picture shows the wood installed ( still hanging from the lift )


( . . . and it hasn't hauled anything except lawn chairs on a blanket SINCE !!! )
