Father/son builds: Here's a great Easter present for your kid

I've got a 13 year old that works on the truck with me. We will get him his own 67-72 in two years, so he's getting my old takeoff parts. He's really excited.

I figured it's time to help him get some tools of his own, and Easter is a perfect excuse. Instead of a video game, I bought him this. Walmart has this on sale for $49! It showed $59 in the clearance aisle, and then it rang up for $10 off that.

You stole my thunder! I was thinking the same thing.

One of my pastor friends Randall Popham brought out the tool kit his dad bought him when he was a kid the other day during a sermon. Tools do more for kids than just fix things.

Awesome! My dad bought me a craftsman tool box with the basic tools, a flashlight, and jumper cables when I turned 16 - I still have them - minus a socket here and there. I did the same for both my boys when they turned 16.

Funny thing is my tools quit growing legs when the boys had their own. Come to think of it so did my dad's. Man, the older my dad gets the smarter he becomes - Ha!

Good for you Mister-B! Great gift for any young man or woman who are interested in working on cars/trucks and such.

I've got 2 brothers, and my Dad bought us all decent starter sets.
He was a Craftsman guy, so we were too.
We also got a steel folding lid toolbox to keep them in.
At that time it seemed to weigh 200 pounds.

I know Snapon and Craftsman and what have you are probably even better quality, but I gotta say- I've had really good luck with Stanley stuff over the years

I think tools are a great idea for kids, even if they might not fully realize it at the time. When I was a young kid, my Grandfather bought me a tool box for a birthday, and then every holiday or birthday, he'd give me a screwdriver, hammer, etc. at the time there may have been some eye rolling and wishes for that $10 check I could have bought some candy with or whatever, but he's passed on now but the fact that he was right and some of those tools are still around means something

There's nothing like an old truck for a father son project. When my oldest son turned 15. we found a worn out old 71 GMC, put it in the back yard and let him take it down to the last nut and bolt, with hand tools. (Then I showed him what an air impact gun was for.)
After that, he spent the summer sandblasting and painting the frame, cleaning up parts, helping me put things back together, weld in patch panels, and rebuild the engine.
This inspired him to the extent that he went on to college and became a mechanical engineer. He will be the first to tell you that he learned more by working on that old truck, than 4 years of college.

I think whats even more important that buying tools for kids is teaching them that when they are done with them TO PUT THEM BACK WHERE THEY BELONG!

I've driven 45mi. back an forth one time with a couple of my tools resting nicely on my rear bumper on my s10 because SOMEBODY is always in too much of a hurry to not put them away!

I've found my tools laying scatterd in the middled of main street a half a block down the street BECAUSE SOMEBODY IS ALLWAYS IN A HURRY AND DONT PUT THEM AWAY!

I've found my tools peeking through the mud in the yard because SOMEBODY IS IN TOO MUCH OF A HURRY TO NOT PUT THEM AWAY!

I've spent countless hours trying too fix something and cant find my own TOOLS BECAUSE SOMEBODY IS IN TOO MUCH OF A HURRY TOO NOT PUT THEM AWAY!

I think its great to buy tools for kids but they really need the responsability to use and care for them.

I started to buy somebody crafstman tools once and told him that as long as they dont get lost or stolen you can have them for the rest of your life....I dont believe he has one peice of those sets anymore.

i took his keys too the garge from him one day after i came home an all of my garage doors were wide open with nobody around a short text later reveiled he was 40 mi. away with a girl and FORGOT to close the doors!

take his reply too this thread he bought the stanleys for himself and still dont know where they are and he dont understand why I dont want ANYBODY in my garage without me being there anybody can/will pocket shop my tools

I feel your pain, sir. My son has ADHD, so this sort of thing is a real issue. I'm trying to work on my parenting skills a bit with this, and rather than have him put me in the role of a nag, I want there to be consequences. I think far too often, these kids just do what they want, get nagged at by their parents for the 50th time, and as long as they can just weather the nag storm for 5 minutes, they go on their way and do it again. I read a quote. It said "children will learn to require as many reminders as we give them". So, I think taking the kid's vehicle/cell phone/computer away for a day while he thinks about leaving your tools out again is in order. "Oh, you were expecting to be paid for mowing the lawn and doing your chores today? Nope. I'm keeping the money, and you're going with me to the store to get me a new tool, so you can see how expensive this stuff is." "You thought leaving my garage door open while you went out with a girl was smart? This weekend, you'll spend helping me clean the garage".

Anyway, easier said than done, but this is the approach I'm unfortunately going to have to take

I got a Craftsman socket set for my 10th birthday. Have been getting tools every year for the last 18... My grandpa Engraved my initials into each of the sockets and ratchets. Some A** Hat stole them from a house I was helping remoldelfor a friend. Still wish I had them... At least I still have his Snap-On wrench set...

That is really cool, I got all girls, 5 of them. None of them wanted anything to do with wrenching growing up. But now I'm getting grandsons, I got one that is 6 now and he loves my truck. I have let him help me on some small projects.

Mister-B it's. Of just tools (which is cool in and of itself) but by spending time using them you are teaching him character. How to work on a project and have fun on it.

I have some of my grandpas tools, a few of dads tools, and my own tools. I say that with pride because I enjoy not only the tools but maybe even more the time they spent showing me how to use them and. Nobody could string together expletives like grandpa and I have never seen anybody throw a tool in anger with the same accuracy as dad. Good times.

My 6 year old is a car guy and my wife and I have started buying him tools at yard and estate sales. He is always so proud if he can loan you the tool you need around the house. He also has $200 saved for is first car, he's got a good start for 6!!!
