So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

I have been on this forum for some time now. I usually don't frequent the 73-87 threads but I have to show you guys this truck I just bought. I always seach the classified adds... and see this 85 GMC for sale and don't really think too much about it until I read it has a 502 in it. This gets my attention so I call the guy up and go and have a look. I find out the guy has owned the truck since the early 90's and about 5 years ago went right through the powertrain. 502 gm crate motor, built 700r4 tranny, detroit locker rear diff and dual 3" magnaflow exhaust (sounds real nice!!!). So I make the guy an offer on the truck and he declines so I go home thinking to myself I don't need another old truck as I have three already. needless to say I can't stop thinking about the truck so I call him up the next day and raise the anti but he still declines so I said I really did not need the truck and I understood his stand point. Three days latter he calls me up and asked if I still was good on my offer and I said heck yeah. Now its mine . Here are a couple of pictures of the old truck. It needs some body work but that should not be to bad for me as thats what I used to do for a living.

It has an electric fuel pump. I have not found out what kind of pump it is but the truck works really well so it must be getting enough fuel.

Re: So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

Thanks for the compliments guys. Yeah it is a pretty cool truck and I think it would be fun as hell to blow a few mustangs away. The truck is so unsuspecting with the running boards and tool box in the back.

Re: So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

I spy a Workhorse/Vortec badge on the air cleaner. It's an odd place to see one since most were on class a motor homes. When I was still with the company I called on a service facility in Red Deer in addition to Calgary and Edmonton. Funny thing was the guys in Red Deer called me about a Motorhome that had destroyed it's 2nd 8.1l big block. That's pretty uncommon for the 8.1, so my curiosity was up. The shop questioned if a home brew twin turbo setup might have anything to do with the destruction..Um duh! Seems as the guy that created this monster neglected to make any internal adjustments to compensate for the boost cramming in. Needless to say the engine went boom in a big way. That tipped me off to some of the craziness you canucks can be capable of given enough Tim Hortons doughnuts and Canadian beer.

That truck is one hell of a sleeper. Nice score!

Yeah I'm not a fan of the 700r4 either. The guy told me he had it built for this motor so we will see I guess.

Re: So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

My uncle had a 502 truck motor in a 57 Apache he had. It was a 4x4 with the best of the factory stuff when he built it in the early 70's, and weighed in around 7500 with a crane in the back.

That engine didn't even know it was there, and could still tow 8000 pounds like nothing getting 10mpg.

I built a 540 for my chevelle using the Dart block (stouter foundation and more meat for a larger overbore down the road )

Nice find Cmac,,,,any idea what generation 502 that is? Judging by the pic it looks like it has the aluminum front timing cover aka gen 6.
If that is the HT version that I'm guessing it is (which mine is as well) you still got all the forged goodies in the bottom end that the 502/502HO got, so it will take some abuse..great base to modify from, and still has a smallish roller cam. Good score.

Re: So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

your 502 crate might be a gm marine . they came without fuel pump and were designed to use electric pump. my 502 has electric pump also.
Either way what a great find. Did you burn some rubber yet?

Re: So I run across this old guys truck (502 GM crate motor)

When the first generation of 502 crate engines came out in about 1992-3 None of them had provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. They also didn't have the provisions for a bell crank/Z-bar setup for a manual transmission.

It wasn't until some of the latest generation crate engines (which I believe they now call the Gen 6) that's been in production for a few years now that they finally cast these blocks for both mechanical fuel pumps and manual transmission linkage.
