Gas Tank question
I know some of you guys out there have made your own gas tanks to mount under the beds, so I figured I'd see if anyone was willing to help me out.
I am looking to make my own tank that I want to fit the 2001 5.3L fuel pump in as well. I want to mount my tank right behind the axle, I think. I have a friend who is going to help me with some of the fab work, but I'm not sure how to go about my design and what measurements would be right. I believe the fuel pump is ~9.5 inches long, but I've never made a tank before, so I'm not really sure where to begin. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Gas Tank question
Tank size is mostly a preference, aside from the natural limitations such as fitment.
Might help to tell us what year/truck it is? If you know roughly where you want to put it, take some rough measurements of width, height and depth(length). Multiply them to get total area in cubic inches; 1 cubic inch = .0043 US gallons. That will tell you a rough internal capacity, minus things like baffles or tank foam, a sump etc. A simple square/rectangle gas tank can be made mostly out of one sheet of stock if you have a break and make your marks right. Baffles are optional, but not a bad ideas. You can also use tank foam instead of a baffle, as some do.

I used a torch to do mine and 2x 1/4 thick aluminum strap to hang it. Look up project bruser for pics. I installed mine opposite of his 180 tur

Re: Gas Tank question
here are my plans ... be sure you plan ahead if you are using a sheet metal brake... compound bends make it difficult ....
one in progress pic... Check out my build thread for more details... |
