Re: Pipe wrench?
Lol. Leaning towards channel locks or pipe wrench but don't want to hurt the tank neck

Re: Pipe wrench?
I'd say drill it out, but you want to be careful to not get shavings in the tank if you go too far

Re: Pipe wrench?
Drilling around fuel vapor is not my favorite idea.
I would try a screwdriver first. The metal those caps are made out of is not very stout. I'd bet you could force the lock with a screwdriver. If not, I'd try prying it off with a screwdriver. |

Re: Pipe wrench?
Call a lock smith, drilling may cause your tumblers to fall into the tank.

Re: Pipe wrench?
run a 1/4" bit down the center about 3/4-1" deep, then run the drill backwards, then grab the large screwdriver.
nothing will get in the tank[less ya drill farther then 2-3in in], if it did, it would do nothing, only gas soluble particles can make it past the pick up sock in the tank. metal don't dissolve in gas. truckster, the guy uses a gas tank for a back rest [he has no fear], all sort of electronics, probably people smoking, done would of blown up long ago or drove off the road from them being sucked into the window 3in away or door jam with a 40yr old seal, if he has vapor problems that a drill would make it explode. |

Re: Pipe wrench?
Though yes better safe then sorry but, a gas tank 4in from your seat back takes a set of brass ones to begin with and would take a perfect storm of condition to even consider a drill making it explode, if he doesn't think twice about resting his head on the tank for comfort, I can't see a one in a million chance of blowing up is even a concern

Re: Pipe wrench?
Those are pretty cheap locks. Try any key that will go into the keyway. It might open. I'm certain I could easily pick that lock.

Re: Pipe wrench?
Prefferably a torch or plasma cutter if you have one, If not a grinder with a cut off wheel.
Or you could just use a pair of channel locks, they are not very stout and come off easy

Re: Pipe wrench?
I screw a slide hammer down into the lock and thump it a few times. Pieces go flying everywhere.

Re: Pipe wrench?
Tow truck drivers have a pick for gas caps in their lock out kit. Most gas cap locks are two or three tumblers fairly easy to pick. I have one in my tool box but I aint crazy enough to drive that far

Re: Pipe wrench?
Dremel will work best. Cut around the red ring. Metal is only about 1/16" think. If you don't have a Dremel....drill little holes and connect the dots.
There's about 1/8" between that metal cap and the rubber seal. So no worries. Once you get outter ring cut off cap you can cut back rubber grommet with a knife and then just stick two small screw drivers in and depress the tabs. The tabs are at 12:00 and 6:00 looking at the key hole. |
