wiring help 82 chevy c30!

Im new to this site looking for some of you guys's expertise!

I have an 82 chevy c30. 6.2l that I recently accuired in a trade for a beat up 86 samurai.

Okay so I have a few problems. Headlights went out when I hit the brights.

Fuel guage doesnt seem to read right, its dual tanks. It doesnt seem to pass 1/3 and when hitting the switch it moves about 1/8in. You can hear the valve operate.

The temperature guage doesnt read at all.

I have some random wires I found to be unplugged pics are as followed on the link.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated!!!

Re: wiring help 82 chevy c30!

You can find wiring diagrams here: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...c,11766.0.html

These trucks have a problem with tank grounds. Poor grounds will make gauges read incorrect on fuel tanks. The floats are also old. It can be a combo of both for poor readings.

Check the driver side head for the coolant temperature sensor. It's between the #3 and #5 spark plugs. It should have a single wire going to it.

Re: wiring help 82 chevy c30!

Thank you for the help, i wasnt sure exactly how to add photos.

these are random wires that i cannot seem to trade back to a starting location

this is some weird fuel filter that i cannot figure out why he did this or what an benefits of it would be.

this one has a plug that i cannot find where it plugs into, and you can see a white wire that was cut, but seems to be no white wire around that would have gone there

these are two white wires that are unplugged but i dont know what they go to

these two wires are underneath by the fuse panel. it think they may go to the fuel tank area, but seem to do nothing when connected, or not connected.

as of today i am also on my 3rd altenator belt in less than a week! this is irritating! this truck is my dream truck! just have to work out the kinks.

this truck is an electrical nightmare. i am a diesel mechanic for the marine corps, but i know nothing about electrical problems. any help is greatly apprecited.

Re: wiring help 82 chevy c30!

Whoa! That's a mess. Looks like the previous owner had issues and tried to fix them by bypassing the factory wiring. I agree with gchemist on the poor grounds on these trucks. They can cause a lot of issues. Refer to the link of wiring diagrams and start ohming the wires from end to end. Don't just try to hook them up. Could cause some shorts. The wires should be close to .5 ohms when ok. As far as the added wiring, find what it is hooked up to and see if the factory wiring can be put back together. Looks like a long drawn out process. Good luck.

Wow... prior owners create more issues than they repair by "re-wiring".
GM did a serious re-work of the electrical in between 1979 & 1983. 1980 has more in common with the earlier trucks than the later ones.
You can find PDFs' of almost all the GM factory wiring diagrams and service manuals in my signature. These are not the generic "this covers 1981-1986" diagrams. The 1982 wiring diagrams can be found in the back sections of the 1982 service manual. The 1983 stand-alone wiring diagrams may be helpful as well but there are differences.

The white sleeved wire is not likely GM.

I see two mechanical temp-gauge capillary tubes in your first picture. Is the factory temp gauge sender missing?

The odd fuel gauge behavior is probably in the cluster wiring. It could be as simple as a loose ground or power connection behind the instrument cluster or connections at the plug on the printed circuit.

RTFM... GM Parts Books, GM Schematics, GM service manuals, and GM training materials...Please include at least the year and model in your threads. It'll be easier to answer your questions.
And please let us know if and how your repairs were successful.

Re: wiring help 82 chevy c30!

Electrical stuff isn't nearly as hard as some people think. It's a positive, a negative, a switch, a fuse, and then the actual item recieving power (like headlights).

Reading wiring diagrams can be a bit of a difficult learning process. What I suggest to people when they first start learning is to make copies, and then use a highlighter to trace the circuit you're looking at. Before long you'll be reading the connectors and multi-page circuits like they're a simple "Dick And Jane" story. You don't need to see and understand the ENTIRE diagram at once, you just need to concentrate on the particular sub-circuit you're working on.

ive been studing the schematics provided on a provided thread, its easy enough...the hard part is just tracing them all. im also not familiar with all of the componets. it would also be easier if the guy i got it from wouldnt have wired all of the stuff himself. its a huge mess. i have never seen something so bad. if i could i would just pull every wire and re do it, but aint no body got time for that! well at least i dont...not working 6am to 6pm daily.

Re: wiring help 82 chevy c30!

in your first picture the two probes hanging over the fender go to a couple of gauges...do you have some aftermarket gauges under the dash? remove them if they are not hooked to anything.
the plug with the pink and black wire and the 'other' wire(cant really tell the color), I believe that is for the glow plug relay.
Trace the 2 white wires all the way back to where they end/begin. open the loom if you have to.
Do you have a switch, like a toggle or a push button for the glow plugs? that 'may' be why the factory plug is unhooked at the glow plug relay(pink/ black tracer and 'other wire')...it's called a manual override swithc and very common on the 82 6.2's as the factory glow plug switch sucked.
As for the fuel filter, leave it for now...tackle one task at a time.

Your 82 model is similiar to an 80 fuse box. You can find a diagram with info here: http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com/77fusebox.html
