HID's and sealed beam conversion

Anybody use just plain conversion headlights(non projector) and hid's? Putting a set of 4x6 conversions in my truck soon and wanted to see how HIDs worked out without projectors and if they are worth it. Thanks in advance!

better light? a tad, as well as doing it properly? not a chance..

also the immediate effect of blinding all on coming traffic that may now run directly into you kinda outweighs the little bit more light.

Take a flashlight and stick it in your eye. Congrats that's an hid conversion in non hid housings.

Hids ARE designed for projectors or aimed housings

They will work without projectors with hella e-code housings only. Otherwise stay with halogen silverstars on relays. That works really well too.
Seeing that we live in the same state I can tell you I'm pretty sure without a doubt that unless you have a spot light nobodies headlights are close to as bright as mine. Projectors make the word of difference here.

Look at ddm tuning for hids and hella for the proper housings. If you want hi lows you will have to wire with relays and diodes period

Check your local laws first a lot of places its illegal to had hids to anything that didn't have them factory.

So without projectors they are ano go due to blinding oncoming traffic, got ya. No one makes 4x6 projectors either right? And are the e codes worth it? Or would i be best off to just get the conversions and put higher wattage halogen bulbs in it to get more light? Thanks for all the input!

The e codes will produce a respectable cutoff patter to protect drivers from being blinded.

There are company's that make 4x6 projectors but they will cost you 250+for a pair. Which when you buy cheap housings and make your own they really aren't badly priced.

Hella e codes wether you go hid or not are a good upgrade period. They will be the base for better mods later on like hids if you go that rout.

I suggest getting them and running them off relays and see how you like them. Want more light get the hids put in there. If that isn't enough light then you need 4 suns

Are there any alternatives to hella e codes?? Theyre pretty spendy, are there any other cheaper brands that make a e code housing that will work?

yes but you then your still in sealed beam. all the cheap lights have the light being reflected with the lens not the housing which the light reflects off of

its really a matter of going full the distance or not going cheap and the guy with proper halogens will see better than you with less light than say cheap housings and bright light just being thrown out willy nilly

basicly take a mag light and unscrew the lens. same amount of light right? but now can you walk through a trail? no point it at your face? why did you do that? you cant see sh!t

if i built projectors would i have to use pure clear lenses? Thats the big downside for me is that i dont like the look of the projector that much, i like the stock look. i couldnt use the type of lens that has the pattern in the glass right? ill probably just go with either plain conversions, or maybe autopal e-codes for now, with high watt halogens, maybe HIDs in the high beams just to do it ha. thanks for all the input!

not using clear lenses will break up the output and give the glare you just got rid of using projectors.

trust me, you dont want HID in Autopals:

whitish is HID 6000K
the yellowish is Halogen bulb.

both in Autopal clear lens headlight 6x4

Ya i think i will just stay halogen for now, maybe one day i will retrofit projectors, but for now halogen bulbs in normal housings will do the job! Thanks for all the input and ideas on how to make projectors, i may just have to do that someday!

My projectors don't have clear lenses but still give a decent cutoff.

buy the clear lens. just make sure you get the HID kit with the bulbs the have the metal shroud around the bulb. Puts a cutoff on the light. Does the same as the projector.

my pics above were taken with these bi-xenon bulbs with shields.

the shields are neccesary, because otherwise you would always be using HI beams.

but the big problem is that xenon produces so much more light, that the light is reflected and bounced inside and all around the house by the reflector, causing glare (light above the cutt-off...)

this is very clear in the pic I posted above earlier....

so yes...xenon will give you good output in regular houses.....but will annoy the **** out of oncoming traffic...



in this picture I compare regular H4 to the bi-xenon bulb...

low beam: upper part is lower in the xenon bulb...thus focusing on wrong part or reflector

high beam: you can see the opening in the shield of the bi-xenon is completely below the point where the highbeam of the H4 is located. also causing wrong focus on reflector...

best solution for getting as little glare as possible is by painting the inner and outer side of the shield of the bi-xenon bulb flat black with heat resistant paint like VHT...because right now even the back/outside of the shield is chrome causing additional reflection within the housing....

so if you want my two cents:

1. dont do it....go for projectors....

2. if you do want to move forward on xenon in regular houses:
a. paint the shield of the xenon bulb flat black on inside and outside
b. dont go higher then 5000K on the color of the xenon bulb....the blue-ish of the +6000K colors is what annoys at night....

so go for either:
5000K is pure bright white
4300K is warm white
