I'm installing my 292 very soon, time to think about exhaust notes........

I DO NOT want this to sound like grandpa's truck, but I don't want open headers either. I'm thinking I'd eventually like to do a split header and true duals, but for now I'm leaving the engine basically stock with single exhaust. What pipe diameter and muffler combinations would you recommend? Links to videos with decent audio would be great

So guys, what sounds good?

Porter mufflers.

But I doubt you'll be happy til you flip for true split exhaust manifolds and 2-1/2" pipes from one end to the other.

2 1/2 to a large 3 chamber magna flow and 2 1/2 out.

Porters or Smitties if you have a traditional style truck and what ever you like if you have one decked out with more street roddy stuff.

I'm going with the same cast iron headers that Newfisher has on his but running Porters because I like the sound of the old style glasspacks on sixes better than the turbos.

Click on the little 63 Biscayne with the 292 next to the copper F1 pickup. Video is too short though.

Thanks for the videos guys, the Porter's sound great, but I think Dan is right, I probably won't be completely happy with it till I get the split headers on it.

Just finished disassembling the engine last night, everything looks good inside. New bearings, rings and gaskets should have it back together by the weekend. The truck it came out of sat in the woods for almost 15 years, but everything seems to be fine internally, so hopefully I can back the truck out of the shop under its own power in the next few weeks!

I'm going fenton headers and the Dynomax ultraflow. It is basically an x-pipe inside a muffler housing. Very low back pressure + exhaust scavenging. It will be a while before I have any "sounds" to share though.

Would love to hear this. I am running a 292 with split exhaust in mine and am looking for that type of sound.

Actually the sound should be what you like. The sound I like is that similar to what my buddies had with their Chevy sixes with split manifolds and duals or a set of Fenton Cast headers and duals in the early 60's when I could hear Ray Rojas cruise by my house in the evening in his lime fire green 51 Chevy hardtop and know it was him. Every six with duals in town had a distinctive set of pipes on it and you knew who was going by by his pipes and didn't even have to look out the window or out from under the car you were working on in the garage.

That may not even be close to the sound you want now though. Older guys usually like the glass packs while younger guys seem to go for the sound of a set of turbos.

Yeah I have super 40 mufflers on mine so there isn't a whole lot of rasp. I ran open headers for a while but it was way too loud lol. Still sounds like a 6 when you give it throttle, but pretty throaty at idle.

That thing sounds awesome! We just put the brakes in mine this morning, gonna do some finishing touches this week on the engine and put it in. I'm getting pretty excited, I might actually get this thing on the road in time for my wedding!

Sounds awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm curious though,........Why are you not using the proper water pump for the 292? It looks as if you have a 250 pump without the coolant bypass.

Good question! I honestly don't know since that's the motor that came with the truck when we bought it. Someone went through it before we did but I wasn't aware that it had a different water pump on it. The number on the block is 1970 which someone told me is a block from 64-66 (can anyone confirm that?). Should I pick up a proper water pump for it?

And thanks for the responses guys. That was a cold start so the idle will usually settle down after a while and get a little mild cam idle sound going to it.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
