Charcoal Canister Rebuild

I searched the thread and heard others refer to replacing the charcoal in the canister. How does the canister come apart? Thx for the help

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

About the only rebuilding that can be done is changing the charcoal filter. Just snap the top off and replace the bag, about $2 bucks at most DIY auto parts stores.

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

Thanks, I was not sure how it was assembled. I will take a look at mine and see if I can get it apart.

If you're successful with this would you mind posting how you did it? I'm curious about this as well. Thanks- Ryan

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

Well, not very successful. My canister is sealed shut, The small cap on top comes off but I do not see where you would fill the canister. The bottom has a what looks like insulation and behind it you can see the charcoal. So I am lost, need input from those who have done this.

I still have the original canister if that matters.

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

I know that the insulation part is a filter which is still available as a AC Delco part but I haven't been able to determine how to "break" into one without ruining the canister. The top part that comes off is the purge valve which is servicable and every now and then I've found nos ones on eBay

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

I have cut the canister with a Dremel and a cut off wheel.

Then replace the charcoal with charcoal from the pet store (for aquaraiums).

Then reattach the canister pieces together.

I don't remember, I either used a hot glue gun or PC-7 epoxy to reattach the pieces.

Re: Charcoal Canister Rebuild

How did the repair work? I think my purge valve is bad. It seems to pass air in either direction but I'd rather not break it by taking it apart.
