Maiden Voyage - Finally On The Road !

At long last I finally have my truck back on the road today!! Been down longer than I like to think about. Swapped out the sm465/np205 set-up for a 350TH/np205. Loved my 4x4 4 speed but being almost 64 years young and "Arthur" getting to my knees sometimes ya' just gotta' do what a man's gotta do" . While doing the swap, pulled the engine for a freshen up.

New pan gasket, new starter and water pump, power steering pump and hoses, double roller chain, valve stem seals, Edelbrock Performer intake with Edelbrock 600 cfm elec. choke carb, Pertronix HEI ignition and coil. Changed over to a 4 core radiator, changed out the floor shift tilt for an auto tilt. Installed my newly re-chromed transfer lever and trim ring. Smoothed the rough casting marks off the center dumps and coated with POR Cast Iron Gray, installed tall oil fill tube and 4x4 dip stick with stock valve covers. Engine de-greased and painted Chevrolet Orange. Still have a bit of underhood cleaning and painting to do but for the time being I want to drive it and just enjoy my truck again !!

Couple pics of the truck and engine bay cause I know I'll catch some flak if I don't post em up Made a steel plate to cover the hole in the rubber mat where the shift lever came thru. Very satisfied with my mat and have read some bad things on the board about new replacements not being up to snuff.

Last pics I have right now. In the under hood pic you can see the corded light I added some time back. Really like that mod. Can run the cord all the way back to the tailgate.

Re: Maiden Voyage - Finally On The Road !

Sharp truck !! Are you running a long or short water pump setup ? My 72 K20 has the alternator on the drivers side .

Did you have to change the drive shaft lengths when you changed from manual to automatic ?

Have a great day !!!

Re: Maiden Voyage - Finally On The Road !

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Really means something to hear folks talking about " MY " truck that way when I have seen so many really outstanding trucks on the board. Being as the truck is basically stock as came from the factory I don't compare it to so many of the trucks here that have SO MUCH more mod and cutom work done to them. I'm pretty much ''old school'' in my attitude on cars and trucks. I can appreciate the work done on a lowered, bagged truck but just not me.

The seats are an aftermarket custom set-up I found at at the Wichita Sunflower swap meet several years ago. Really VERY comfortable but at the moment still sit a bit higher than I like. Need to work on new brackets in that respect. Mounted to the original bench seat threaded floor pan holes so did not have to add more holes to the truck. Spent too much time and money patching holes during the build.

With the alternator on the right side and the engine being a '74 block I am running the long water pump. That most likely accounts for the problem in getting the lower radiator hose to fit correctly. Still have the old hose I removed, am saving it to compare, hoping to find a lower hose that fits a little better.

I did have to re-do the drive shafts, both front and rear. Front drive shaft because the newer model np205 ('79) had the flanged mounting and the rear drive shaft because of the differant length and the output shaft spline differance between the sm465/350TH.

All in all, quite satisfied with the truck now being an automatic. Put about 20 miles on it yesterday and plan on much more to come. On a kinda funny note, when I get in the truck I still unconciously try to "stab" the clutch pedal to the floor to start the truck and then realize "it ain't there, dummy"

Guess now I need to edit my signature at the bottom of the page since no longer have the 4 speed.
