Steering Play
Due to an unexpected job loss my 68 stepper was down for well over a year in pieces. First time on the road was yesterday. New wiring, carb and brakes all the way around I just finished with my first pay check. Anyway now to address some of the other issues the old girl has, steering slop.
What have others done to resolve this? While driving I am constantly needing to adjust lane control. I don't know much about suspensions and I don't want her down again.. Where should I start?

What has been done to the front suspension?
Any recent rebuild of any of the front ball joints, tie rods, a-arm bushings, idler arm, pitman arm, etc?

I bought it in 2009 and the guy I got it from had done a lot of work to it (mostly cosmetic) but I don't know what if anything was changed with the suspension. Is there a quality kit I should look into to replace all that stuff and about how much would it be?
She is sitting on lowering springs and new shocks plus 100% new drum brakes I did, that is all I know for sure.

I would rebuild it with Moog parts if it's needed.
You may just need a new steering box.

Getting it aligned could help as well...a good tech should be able to tell you which parts are good and which need replacing.

I have an appointment next week with a recomended alignment shop here in town. Might be something as simple as that..

Nice...
I'd ask around on prices too before your appointment to see how bad they hose you on them in case a lot needs replacing. The majority of people like Moog for replacement parts and rockauto.com has the BJs for about $15 ea and tie rod ends about $10 ea (inner and outter). Check with the vendors too though cuz it's always good to support those that support this board.

Can't believe its been 3 months since I made this post. I found a guy that has his own small shop and we put on the idler arm, addressed a leaky wheel cylinder and replaced the brake hose. Everything else was in good shape. Slowly but surely getting there.
It was great driving today without having it wandering all over the place. It was a good day..
