Re: 350 4 bolt main block

correct i unburied it today there is a "1" in there casting id says 69-79. there is light rust on bores its been sitting since mid 90's . i would have any engine bored before putting any money into it anyway , boring is not expensive compared to tryin to save a couple hundred and have maybe have one cylinder burn a lil oil.

Re: 350 4 bolt main block

Boring is not a problem.. I just want to be sure it does not need to have liners installed or has had the mains spin and need to be align bored. What are the front pad numbers?

Re: 350 4 bolt main block

it should have a 3 or 4 digit code on the back of the block near the cast number or the right side of the bell housing area. It will be a letter to designate the month next will be the day and the last year cast. It may also have a circle with a arrow in the middle showing the time of day and shift it was cast.
I wont to be sure it is a 71 or earlier block. most blocks are cast a few months before production but a few earlier ones have been used.
The stamped numbers don't mean a whole lot to me.. other than it may show as a truck block. If this was a Corvette I would want a numbers stamped block. Most of the time the numbers are milled during decking, or it may be a replacement. I have found the numbers at the 12 o clock position above the timing cover.

Is a pre 71 block that much different ? The only number possible to see when its in a truck is the casting id

Re: 350 4 bolt main block

J kippin, .. I might be uncovering some stuff here that you don't want me too If so, man I apologize.

But, what you're probably looking for is an 010/020 stamp under the timing sproket on the cam gear and / or a stamp on the main caps with the numbers beginning 24xxx.

rsmarr1982, it would be well worth your time to check these two places.. hint.hint

Just trying to help.

Re: 350 4 bolt main block

post 71 they were a little 'less' nickle/tin content. IF this is a real High Nickle core, somebody grab it. These are getting harder and harder to find. Dirt Trackers use them a lot.
