Re: 3 speed OD help 65 stepside

J Lee 223:
The seven bolt has a synchronized first gear and is the later model transmission. The four bolt has an unsynchronized first and is more "correct" for our year of trucks. The deciding factor in my mind would be if I could check the governor and solenoid on each and buy the one that has these parts in working condition. The governor and solenoid are the two parts that are unique to these transmissions and are getting hard to find.

I hope this helps.

PS I have the seven bolt mode.

I am not aware of a rebuild kit for the overdrive tranny. The rebuild kits for the non overdrive version of this tranny (i.e. SM318 for four bolt) would likely have most of the parts you would need.

Hi, jlee, you stated, "probably going with the 4 bolt just to keep it period correct". All else being equal (heck, even if I had to pay a few bucks more)I'd opt for the fully-synchronized one. It's next best thing to a 4-speed as far as drivability is concerned. Ex: when approaching a yield sign, you can shift into 1st gear while still going 10-15 mph; and when you see the way is clear, you can accelerate right on off without having to come to a complete stop to shift into 1st gear before taking off. There will be numerous scenarios where you'll be too slow for accelerating in 2nd and need to shift into 1st--you can not do that w/out completely stopping in the 'period-correct' tranny--yet you could in the fully-synchronized one.

Please believe me: when I (we) drove cars of the late 50's and into the mid 60's, we'd give $ in a hurry to upgrade to a fully-sync'd 3-speed--that's when 4-speeds were just too expensive and hard to even find. The fully-sync'd 3-speeds were just a welcome addition and such a pleasure to drive. Also made your car much more desirable when you finally decided to sell it, making it a good return on investment. Cannot prove this, but we always felt the fully-sync'd 3-speed trannies were more heavy-duty than the non-sync'd ones.

HTH,
Sam

Will the seven both accommodate a three on the tree I really don't want to get rid of that
