Re: CO is a rip off...

I totally understand, Washington is just as bad. I left the DMV paying 235 for my truck. I even had to pay sales tax on the truck it self even though I bought it from a private seller. How can they do that? They got the sales tax when the PO rolled it off the lot for the first time.

Oh well, I just call these things STUPID TAX, and then drive on.

Here's a good one. I bought a '60 Apache in '86, had to pay sales tax. I moved to Texas in 87. Moved back to California in 91 and got nailed with sales tax again! I even had the original paperwork. They didn't care; "if you want to register it, you have to pay."!!!

Funny part was the lady said the older trucks cost more because they weigh more.... they do more damage to the road... Unreal!

Re: CO is a rip off...

It cost me $80.00 just to get a title for my 68 on going project,Had to drive it 50 miles to DMV for VIN inspection, that was fun ! NOT ! did get a lot of nice comments about her while waiting for the inspection, so I guess it was worth the money? I thought one guy was going to crawl under it to look closer ? I don't drive mine often enough at the moment, but when I do, I remember why I enjoy them so much.....

This is my favorite, especially since most if not all older vehicles weigh less than their newer counterparts.

Well, that's one good thing about Oklahoma. Tags on our trucks run just $20/yr. They do hit us for 4.5% sales tax on the purchase though. I doubt there's a state that doesn't.

Just don't let Barney Fife catch you driving that collector vehicle to work. MN cops love seeing those collector plates between 9 and 5 on weekdays. BIG fine.

I pay the $40/year so I can drive my truck when and where I want.

i would agree with you that that sucks, but then again, I live in CA... We are on parallel tracks to oblivion
CA added a >$100 fee for because my 66 C10 swb was considered a "commercial" truck since it had no cap on it. Scum bunnies.

Re: CO is a rip off...

States are using every loophole to generate income. Just be sure every charge you get is listed on your registration if paying in cash. heard of tellers pocketing money taken in on phony charges.

here in Maine we have a one time sales tax, and then yearly registration is soley based on sticker price and age. i had to pay $400 the first time i registered my 72 Burb C20 (on a $7500 purchase price) but since then it has been very reasonable at under $55. my 87 Dodge Ram 50 cost about the same. my last few daily drivers however....

89 Lesabre fwd ~ $105
97 Sable wagon ~ $115
97 Camry 4cyl ~ $125

that @$%# Toyota is 16 years old, has 245k on the clock and only has a 4 banger, yet it costs more than my big American v6 wagon before it. it's a good car and was cheap (yet another hand me down daily driver) but i will either put my Ram 50 back on the road next or get a 20 year old K chassis Chrysler product....maybe a 4 cylinder dynasty with a stick shift swap!!

my two Honda motorcycles combined only cost me $60 and i will be saving a lot of money this summer on fuel!

Re: CO is a rip off...

You guys would like our system here in Saskatchewan. When you get your license plates here your insurance is included the price ( and its the same for all vehicles, not just the older stuff ) and the plates for my truck are 35.00 a month or 420.00 a year with 700.00 deductible and 200,000 liability but for another 12.00 a month your deductible goes to 200.00 and liability jumps up to a 1,000,000. Oh yea, I pay the 35.00 monthly and when I put the truck away for the Winter I just cancel the plates and leave the extra 12.00 a month insurance so I am covered for fire, theft etc. and when I replate e following year There are no non-op or fees like that and you only pay sales tax one time. There is no such thing collision here, if you get in an accident whether it is your fault or not both vehicles get fixed or paid out. If you are at fault or get lots of they ding you when you renew your drivers license and I've heard of guys paying 1000.00 a year for their drivers license. A few years ago they even sent every one in the Province 100.00 rebate because they had surplus of cash.

Mass is the worst. I ce bought a '57 Bel Air for $6000 from a private party. The state charged me sales tax on a $37,000 vehicle as "book" value said it was worth it. No way around it. Its all a big game.

I second Mass being the worst.
I paid 1200$ for my non running '72 C-10 from a private seller in Georgia. DMV took $650 from me for sales tax and to register and plate it based on the $7000 book value.
And the only way to get antique plates here is if it's only used for parades and such.

There is a slight benefit to the commercial plates.....loading zones. I park in them all the time, even got in an argument with the local parking enforcement Popo, about me parking there.....he ended up leaving me alone and leaving

Re: CO is a rip off...

In Iowa it used to only cost $65 to register any truck and the older it was it the less it was down to a minimum of I think 15 or 20 dollars. The state changed that starting January 1st 2009 and made it like cars and suv's to be charged by list price and vehicle weight. Farmers and contractors can still register for $65 if they prove they do what they do but now if Joe Shmoe goes and buys a fully loaded pick up they are going to pay some hefty tag prices.

If you owned your truck before January 1st of 09 you still pay the lesser rate. Since I bought my 69 last year I pay $55 to register it and since I had my 95 for ever I pay $35 to register it. Pretty funny huh.

Side note. Iowa doesn't do antique or vintage plate registration for cheaper like other places.

Maybe the only positive thing in Illinois is that "Antique" plates are $30 for 5 years. Everything else here is corrupt.

Re: CO is a rip off...

They tried that sales tax based on some "blue book" declared value thing here in Ohio about 25 years ago. I guess they thought they were being cheated by people who lied about the amount that was actually paid? But it didn't last long, people were outraged.

We do have an antique registration, they call it "historical". Anything over 25 years qualifies, but there are restrictions. They are fairly easy going about them if you don't abuse it.
Simple one-time registration that lasts as long as you own it. Liscense plates do not go with the vehicle when it is sold, like some states

Re: CO is a rip off...

Georgia is great for somethings and horrible for others: Ga does not require titles for anything 25 years or older. The bad thing is that if you have a title they will take it from you and not return it. They will not process a title. So if you have a title you don't even turn it in. Antique plates in Ga have a mileage restriction to them. You can run regular plates that don't cost hardly anything though. They just passed a new law that you pay 6% sales tax instead of the yearly ad valorem(birthday tax).

In California all pickups are considered commercial and pay weight fees. I put the bed cover on mine and registered it as a housecar which pays no weight fees. Just can't haul anything except camping gear. I have been pulled over twice by the CHP and beat them in court both times I pay $85 a year.

It's worth doing what you did or even buying a cheap cap to stick on temporarily - it will pay for itself in about 5-10 years...
