starter problems with engine swap for 68 c10

Hello all,
I swapped my I6 for an 80's 305, got it in and the last issue is the starter. I can't get it to fire. I noticed on my old I6 and starter it has 2 wires, but the new one has three. Any advice?

Ok first you say you can't get it to fire. Do you mean that the starter will not turn over or the engine will not fire.

The starter with three wires were used for engines with point type distributors, but can be used for others. The positive wire from the battery is hooked up to the large bolt on the starter and a small wire is hooked up to one of the small bolts from the ignition switch, I think it is the purple wire if my old memory is right.

Since we're on the starter subject I would highly recommend making sure starter bracket is installed ( keeps starter from "racking" and cracking your block ) and properly shimming prior to trying to turning over . You can check clearence between starter and flywheel with an allen wrench . Just a couple simple steps that could save you a lot of grief .

Not sure if all engines have that front starter bracket. I personally have never used or owned a rig with a SBC that had that front bracket on the starter. I have never had a block crack.

I've seen two blocks over the years that have cracked in the same location and were welded up to be repaired , the bracket can be found for under 10 bucks and is just cheap insurance in my opinion . I don't think you have to have them but for the inexpensive cost and fairly easy to install I will always use them where applicable .
