Cold spark plug.
I am about to change the spark plugs on my truck. Since I bought the truck already built I have no clue on engine compression, cam etc. So I bought the ones that were on the truck (r42ts) anybody running these? Research shows they are really cold.
Mods on the truck that I could see.. 383 stroker, edelbrock performer, edelbrock weber 600 cfm (I think) 4 barrel carb, headers, cam ( small they told me) accer super coil, msd wires. Any other plugs you guys recommend? And what gap? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Cold spark plug.
I recommend the coldest plug that will work w/o forming deposits on electrode. I buy the cheap plugs in three heat ranges to determine how low I can go.

Re: Cold spark plug.
I'm not sure what ping feels like.. If I step on the truck really hard while on the move it will almost like neutralize, then move if I let go of some gas, don't know if its related to the plugs. I pulled cylinder 1 plug and it looked perfect.

Re: Cold spark plug.
That sounds like something accelerator pump related possibly.

Re: Cold spark plug.
Ping at any speed will do damage if prolonged. This will sound like pennies bouncing in the engine

Re: Cold spark plug.
Oh ok.. Never heard that sound like pennies bouncing.. I actually thought it was the transmission slipping and neutralizing. I will do a search on the accelerator pump. First carburated car

Re: Cold spark plug.
The accelerator pump squirts a few drops of gas inside venturi each time you press accelerator. You can watch the fuel squirt if look into carb (look when engine is OFF) while stroking accelerator linkage. Often linkage to accel pump has 3 holes to adjust how many drops are squirted in. Over time the rubberish accel pump piston seals harden and need replacing. The accelerator pump can easily be serviced on many carbs in a couple minutes w/o removing carb; may have 4 screws.

Re: Cold spark plug.
Ok so I tried to see fuel squirting but couldn't. I hear and smell it though. Here's a few pics, found out the carb I have is an edelbrock 1806s, 650 cfm. It looks pretty dirty, how would I go about cleaning it?
Also the linkage is on the middle hole should I put it on the top hole? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Cold spark plug.
You pick the acel pump hole which makes car react best to brisk pedal push.
Of course it won't pump anything if the well is dry. If you can hear and smell it you should be able to see it. On many 4BBL the fuel squirts out in two streams into primaries. |

Re: Cold spark plug.
You have to remove the entire top of edelbrock to change pump.
Tips: Read edelbrock manual. Tie dental floss to small clips for easy removal w/o loosing. Don't remove floss till clips safely at home. Loosen but don't remove rod covers. Remove rods/springs before removing top. After loosening all top screws bump top back and forth w/ hand before pulling off in effort to save top gasket. Check float and jets while top off. Lube new accelerator piston seal before installing. Don't drop your grills into intake. |

Re: Cold spark plug.
Thanks. I have an edelbrock and really like it. Can buy many jet sizes for all kinds of tuning. Rebuild is almost fun. Makes my engine run great. Get pretty good AFR per wideband O2 gauge. Some like berryman B12 chemtool for cleaning.

Re: Cold spark plug.
Just to update.. I moved the linkage to the upper hole and there's no more neutralizing under hard acceleration!!!.. Thank you guys for all the help.
Also all 8 spark plugs look good not going to change them yet. If it ain't broke why fix it. ![]() Posted via Mobile Device |
