Took Her Out For a Run Today and There Has To Be Something Wrong...

Well guys just drove my 72 up the highway to put gas in it and when I was driving my speedo was saying im going 90 and everyone around me is goin faster than me and the speed limit is 65. Also it seems like it has no power to it whatsoever. I mean yea its a 305 but it still should have some power. I couldnt even get to the speed the people around me were going, if I tried it would start shaking real bad and Im to scared to try it. It also smells like somethins burnt when I get out, not bad but I smell it. I got home and lifted the hood and woah it was hot under there... Like really hot. I really need to get this checked out if Im going to use this as a dd. Is it cause I was pushin the 305 to hard or what? Im thinking if this is how its gonna be, Im going to have to get some cash to do a engine and trans swap... I only have 3 gears and its pushin itself hard to get to like 50 mph.. BUT good thing is I got to drive her some and saw a 69-70 chevy pull up to the station, was patina dark green. Old guy was driving it, didnt seem to interested in anyone around him, filled up and left.

Re: Took Her Out For a Run Today and There Has To Be Something Wrong...

youve got a challange from the sounds of it
sounds like you have something way out of tune
does it sputter and backfire at all
possible timing issue with the power, age of the engine bogging down the power may need rebuild due to sludge and carbon holding it back causing it to heat up

what gearing are you running because you may need a gear for in the trans to calibrate the speed to the speedo

like you said it is a 305 and many problems may come upon you so start searching craigslist for a 350

Doesnt sputter or backfire but I got finished fueling up and when I went to start it, it got slow and it would try to start but it was like it couldnt... The PO said he put a posi rear with 3.73 gears in.

Re: Took Her Out For a Run Today and There Has To Be Something Wrong...

My dad has a spare 350 and trans from a old chevy van he had. He took it out cause he had another van that he put everything from it into this one. I cant remember what was wrong with it but nothing major... I dont know if it would be worth it to put it in my truck. Doesnt sound fun... A van engine in my classic... Lol. But I could probably spiff it up a bit. Idk I might try if I cant get this 305 worked out.

I had one do that many years ago. It turned out to be the centrifugal advance in the distributor had siezed up. I removed it and completely disassembled it and gave it a good cleaning. Worked like a charm after that.

Your timing is waaaayyyy off and retarded too much, it will make your exhaust manifolds or headers hot enough to glow red/orange.

You need to recheck your timing. Do it correctly with a timing light, and with the vacuum advance disconnected. Get a service manual to walk you through stepo by step.

My grandpa just rode with me around the highway. We pull over cause some sockets fell out of my bed (motorcyclist informed me) DOH! He then took a tube off and put his finger over the hole, it sounded WAY better. He messed with the distributor but nothin, he told me I need to get the timing light and all and he'll show me how to work it. Im gonna get to it tomorrow when hes off work so I have some help and dont mess anything up. Thanks for the help guys, ill post my progress tomorrow.

Re: Took Her Out For a Run Today and There Has To Be Something Wrong...

Highway speed vibration could be driveline related.
Have you done any work to the truck recently?

Nothing wrong with a 305, or even a 350 from a van... displacement is about the least important factor in making power, compression ratio, heads, cam, intake, and carb all more important than a few cubes. A 350 from a van could have made more power than a 350 in a corvette, several years the corvette made less than 200hp.

That is a pretty brave, although very vague, statement.
Yes, you can de-tune or mis-tune a bigger engine and kill it's power....but, when properly tuned more displacement is going to make more power, especially if that comes from stroke. Stroke gives you more torque, which is what moves these heavy bricks around.

Configuration, is what makes the power you need. A short stroke, high revving motorcycle engine may make 200 horsepower, but it's at 9500 rpm....and the torque is about 100ftlbs somewhere around 7500 rpm. In a truck? Sled, sled being dragged uphill.

This is why most of the guys in the engine-drivetrain forum advise toward 350s. You get more bang for your buck and the torque numbers come right along with it.

Right, given everything else being equal the larger engine will always make more power.
A 350 only has 13% more displacement than a 305 (let's assume larger engines don't have more friction and the 350 makes 13% more power not a perfect comparison I know) some air filter companies advertise those kind of performance gains.
My main point is that there's nothing wrong with keeping a 305 for dd street use especially if your performance goals are in the 250hp range.
The 305 being a 305 isn't this guys problem.

You gotta Auto trans?? If you do you could have a vacuum leak on the trans vacuum line. This will cause it not to shift correctly or delay then will cause the truck to run high rpm but no move good. Also can answer you fuel consumption if you are running the engine harder just to get the power to move.
