what should i do with 1500 dollars?
i have a 69 swb with a stock 350 engine im thinking its a newer block maybe 77 to 88 block and im thinking of putting a top end kit on it however idk which heads or cam i know i want to go with an edelbrock air gap intake but idk if maybe i should convert my front drums to disc brakes with the money. i can probably swing 1700 if i decide to go with the engine upgrade because i know heads are expensive at least for good ones. if i decide to do the disc brake conversion then ill go with the 2.5 drop spindles then with money that i have left over ill get headers and exhuast set up at a muffler shop but then ill really not have money for a long time to get heads cam and intake so that will kinda suck. if i do the engine upgrade then eventually ill have enough money to get the cheaper things like headers exhaust and disc brake conversion. i just was wondering what you guys think i should do? any input is well appreciated.

Go get yourself a set of reconditioned Vortec Heads, Vortec Intake (for carb) and your headers. Setup your engine before switching suspension. If you arent happy with they way a truck runs you wont spend more on it down the road anyways.

Safety first.Do the disc, and headers. Then save for the intake. You'll see better braking and better performance for your budget.Buy parts as you can afforf them.Eldebrock has some good top end kits that are matched and will wake it up.Check compression before you do the heads,no sense in putting lipstick on a pig.

Re: what should i do with 1500 dollars?
Get it dependable, safe, and stopping good first then think about making a good thing better. (the engine, cam, heads, etc) Does it run ok?
Just my .02, if it looks like you want it to, I feel like you'd drive it more and it keeps you interested in it. Get that 'awesome stance' whatever you feel like that is then start playing around with the engine. Is this your daily driver?

If its your dd buy an old pos import that gets 30+mpg. The money that you save on gas adds up pretty quick.
If you can't afford an old truck and a car, you can't afford an old truck. My $800 miata has saved me a ton of cash, and being a 5 speed with a posi its pretty fun. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: what should i do with 1500 dollars?
Do things the things that NEED to be done first, then you can do all the things you want to.
Do you need to go faster or do you need to stop after you star moving? If you get more go, you are gonna need more....well you get the point. If your engine is reliable I would suggest doing the brakes and suspension first. It wont matter how fast you get to the turn if you cant get around it.

I rather have a truck that wouldn't run than one that wouldn't STOP

Re: what should i do with 1500 dollars?
its not my dd i just have it as a weekend warrior the engine runs decent right now may a little tuning would make it better. i drove a 67 longbed c10 for a few years with drum brakes and never had a problem thats why im kinda leaning more towards the engine upgrade but idk ive dropped it and it has the stance im looking for doesnt look great needs paint body work but i dont really care about that right now until the engine is nice and suspension is good. well heres a few pics. and how can i figure out the compression ratio would i just need the casting number or is there any other way besides tearing down the whole engine and taking measurements?
thanks for all the replys great thread so far ha |

Re: what should i do with 1500 dollars?
i have a 69 chevy swb with an engine from 77-82 the engine is a 350 and runs decent i was wondering if this set up would work im planning on trying to get around 350-400 hp and around the same for torque. i have an msd streetfire hei dist. and i believe my carb is 1405 edelbrock might be a 1406 not 100% sure the rest of it is stock. im thinking of getting the vortec heads by gm up to .550" lift for camshaft 64cc 1.94" intake 1.50 exhaust 1.379" diameter springs and the valve guides are clearanced for up to .550" gross lift. PN NAL-VORTECzz5. the intake im looking to get is edelbrock performer rpm air gap PN 350-7516 the cam is a lunati voodoo lifer kit PN lun-60102lk. what else would i need like a cheap decent set of roller rockers and pushrods??? and will all this be a decent set up?

I just rebuilt a 350 engine and put it in my 69 gmc. It is a early 90s block punched 40 over with a set of vortec heads, modest gmpp cam #14097395 (196/206 @ 050), and an Edelbrock performer intake. it is estimated 310 hp and 350 ft-lb. It is allot of fun and having the heads worked over, machine shop and parts I was just over $1000 into it. With a hotter cam I can see you getting closer to the numbers you want. Look into the Weiand intakes, they are claiming more power than the Edelbrock and they are cheaper.
