Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

I think it is an 85 dually with regular dually bed. Is there anything in particular I should look at since it has the slide in wrecker in it. I am thinking it is a Holmes 440 in the back of the bed. I have no use for the wrecker part but am interested in the truck it self. Just didn't know if due to it having the wrecker in it if there might be trouble areas to look for. It is a Scotsdale with 454 and an auto. Not sure on transfercase yet.

I will post pics tomorrow after I get back home. Not sure what he is asking yet. I will have to look into where a good place to get rid of the wrecker at to see if it would be feasible to go ahead and buy it.

The normal rust spots id look at the rear half of the frame see if they boxed it or any cracking. And there should be a counter weight under the front end of the truck too.

Re: Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

Well I went to look at the truck and the owner was out on a wrecker call. So I could only look at it and didn't get to find anything else out about it. It is an 84 though. It's not too bad of shape but will need some work as you will see from the pics. Someone said they thought he wants 4500 for it which I think is a bit much since it is going to need some work. Overall it is what I am wanting. I am going to try and catch him tomorrow or monday.

Re: Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

It didn't have a SPID sticker in the glovebox so I couldn't tell what all the options were. It does have lots of spring in the rear and in the pics you can see that it has airbags as well. It has dents in it enough to bring the value down in my eyes. I didn't get underneath it yet. Maybe next time.

Just lots of little stuff that add up. I could have taken a few more of things it will need but you get the picture. It has been setting for a few years as well. So not sure if the gaskets have dried up on it. It had a Holmes 220 instead of the 440 that I thought it was.

In between the cab and bed it is painted the silver that you see in the interior. Makes me think that maybe the red and white is a repaint. Would like to have seen the SPID. It does have the 454 and automatic in it too which is a plus. Also to find that it has air and pl,pw too.

I would talk him down some and scrap the wrecker and front bumper off it.

Re: Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

That is a kind of rare wrecker setup. Post it in the parts section and get more. If you dont like the bumper, lose it. I like it, but I travel through deer country a lot. I wouldn't pay more than 1500 if it was stock, but a 4wd dually with an auo is a bit rare. Not to mnton the wrecker setup. I would go up to 2750 as long as the frame is in good shape. Check the frame where the cab and bed meet and behind the rear axle. These are the highest stress points with that wrecker. Let us know!

Re: Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

Check under the hood for the SPID sheet. I had an 84 and it was on the driver side inner fender.

From a distance it looked like a decent truck, but closer the dents and dings come out. Tranny and t-case should be a TH400 and NP205. But $4500 is too much that....

Re: Going to look at a K30 with a slide in wrecker

Check for cracks at steering box also. Has the rear frame been modified for the bumper/wrecker set up, like the ends of the rails cut off. It also looks like it is going to need floors and braces, prob inner/outer rockers or at least work on them. I would also check the seam on the firewall under the hood for rust. I`d be thinking mabe $2500 if I needed it, @ $220/ton you aren`t going to get rich scrapping the wrecker unit.
