Looks like he was in Tennessee somewhere because the lime green trucks are TDOT roadside assistance vehicles.

I drove from Nashville to Calhoun Ga on Sat morning and it was rough. We hydroplaned all over the road. Glad to see it is mostly in one piece.

Re: Doh!!!
Sorry guys... I posted those pictures as I was walking out the door this morning. My girlfriends daughter and I were coming south on I-75 about mid-day / saturday morning. We'd been to a bike ride that we chose to bail on... to wet... We were going to follow a couple other guys to a 50+ yr old bike shop to check it out. So I'm following the other 2 vehicles. The lead car makes a lane change and I check my mirror to see if I can move over... it was going to be tight... So I accelerated... when it downshifted the rearend lost traction and broke out... at interstate speed... maybe 60-70mph? I feathered out of the throttle and turned the wheel in the direction of the skid trying to bring it back... She swung back left and did a full 360*... well it was more then a 360... Actually started around again, and we were headed south ... sideways. The whole time I kept expecting an impact of either us hitting someone or something, or someone hitting us... it never happened. I really don't even remember applying the brakes, but you can only spin around so many times without scrubbing off some speed... I really thought I was about to straighten it back out when the rear of the truck passed the front ... again... by this point we'd slowed down considerably... which is fortunate, because we left the highway... backwards.
In retrospect, hitting the ditch was a good thing... there's no telling what might of happened if we had come to a complete stop facing the wrong direction on a busy interstate highway... Call it "lucky" or "blessed" or a combination of the both... either way, we are very fortunate. After asking my passenger if she was ok and instructing her not to leave the truck or remove her seatbelt, I got out to look for damage. Nothing I could see... all 4 tires were still up... so I got back in and fired it up and put it in gear. She moved about 3 or 4 inches and started to spin, so I shut it down and called my buddy I had been following. I told him what had happened and he was kind enough to come back to see what we could do. A couple minutes later the TDOT truck arrived. He said he couldn't blame me for trying to extract it myself... but he couldn't be there... his job was to advise me to call a wrecker or call one for me.... so he left. A few minutes later my buddy pulls up in a Z71 and says he's got a tow strap in his toolbox... he doesn't... But he does have a new length of rappelling rope that he didn't hesitate to roll out and cut off a piece of.... Then the police show up... The officer asked if everyone was ok. He saw that we were about to try and pull it out ourselves and all he said was that he couldn't block traffic for us... it would be to dangerous... so... my buddy backs up and puts a little tension on the rope as I apply the throttle and it pulled right out of the ditch... of course now I'm facing the wrong way on the interstate. The officer then advises that i'd probably better just leave my truck on the side of the road until traffic lets up that evening... which I had no intention of doing. I walked the median about 300 yards up the road and found a point where the ditch ran out and turned in to a level spot... jogged back to my pickup where one of my friends was waiting while the other was standing at the police car talking to the officer. My friend at the truck suggested that I just get in the truck and back it on up instead of asking the officer if it was cool... So I did! We backed right in that spot and turned it around and got back on the interstate heading south... slowly! Yes... we still went to the bike shop... and then to lunch... And yes, I bought lunch for these guys that were kind enough to come back and pull my tail out of the ditch! LoL! As far as I can tell, the truck escaped this incident unharmed. Aside from a little grass behind the rear bumper, you'd never know anything happened... the tires aren't even muddy. The bikes in the bed never moved either. I'm 41 years old... I haven't had an accident in over 20 years (until now). I fully understand that more caution is required when roads are wet. I've owned some very fast cars and motorcycles... this is the first time I ever had one break loose at this kind of speed... more caution will definitely be exercised if I find myself on a wet road in this truck again. I wouldn't expect to come out of something like this as lucky again... |

Re: Doh!!!
Sure... The truth is the regular bike trails weren't good enough for you! You had to go and find some new ones yourself... Right?
J/K glad everyone is safe. I almost wiped out a car two weeks ago in my '72 suburban turning a corner at a stoplight At less than 5mph. The a$$ end just started swings around on the barely wet road. Almost put me head first straight into a parked car on the side of the road. I corrected but almost nailed the same car eighth back end ofthe suburban on the counterswing. That's how slow I was going! Luckily I just missed it. Sure am glad your and the family are All okay! Posted via Mobile Device
