Tilt column for 63 GMC
Hello all,
I'm in the process of building my 63 GMC shortbed fleetside..... I have many questions concerning the modifications I'm making. Rather than wear out my welcome, I will post my questions as I go. Please cut me some slack if my questions seem like something I should know, I've been away from building trucks for about 30 years.... time to blow the dust off my creative skills and get busy. I'm looking for an inexpensive tilt column, I was wondering if anyone has purchased one off CPP's universal tilts and addapted it to fit a truck similar in fitment to mine? If so, can you share what was necessary to adapt it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. A little info on my truck: I purchased it stock in 08, since then I have put a 4 link rear in it, installed 1984 1/2 ton front suspension, 4 wheel disk brakes, 2 1/2" drop spindles and 3" springs for a total of 5 1/2" of drop in the front, added 1 1/16" swaybar and recently picked up a Hydroboost unit for my brake setup. The engine I have is a 2000 7.4 (454) vortec GEN VI motor with a MPFI setup, the tranny is a 4L80E. As you can imagine, I have had no shortage of challenges so far. Any input toward my build would be great.... I have been following some of your threads with awe. Captain Fab & Dino, among others, are my build Hero's! Dene |

Re: Tilt column for 63 GMC
I put my tilt column in from a 1974 Chevy van with very little modification and it fit very nice, the early vans had the keys in the dash like our 63's. A couple of pieces from Captain Fab and I was done in no time flat... ezpz

Re: Tilt column for 63 GMC
I bought mine on ebay (hot rod GM universal 32")$199.00 shipped and very happy with it. I also bought the rag joint, OD universal joint and collapsable steering shaft as a kit from CPP. (slight fab work) all I did was install a piece of 5/8 heater hose smashed between the lower part of the dash and steering column used the original park brake lever mounting assy... drill 2 holes on steering column tube and install 2 short threaded inserts (but not necessary) to bolt to park brake lever mounting assy...you will use the original lower mounting ring clamp on the fire wall and replace the foam firewall seal here sum pics..

Re: Tilt column for 63 GMC
I got a tilt out of a 1970's camper van. It was 25% off day at pick and pull so I paid $28 for it. Used the lower column off of a 70's truck with a u joint connecting it all.
