Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
10mpg = 7gallons at $4 = $28 in gas. ouch
$28 x 5 = $140/week $140 x 4 = $560/month $560 is a nice car payment. Tundras and Escapes are 0% financing right now. hehe just saying. Oh wait I just noticed you have one of those gas saver tailgates. so nevermind. |

Quote:
New Tundra and/or Escape: Daily depreciation: $5 min $10 max (maybe more?)..so lets take an average/guesstimate number at say....$8.00/day depreciation. now $8.00 x 7 = $56/week (depreciates every day...unfortunately) $56 x 4 = $224/month Tundra or Escapes daily gas costs (say 35-40% of the chevy)... .35 to .4 x $560 = (say)...$200 difference Tundra or Escape month insurance costs (say...double the Chevy or triple?) So an extra say (guess?) $30/month? Add 'em up: $224 + $200 + $30 = $454 (this is a pretty conservative) (now, I'll leave off there...I didn't include some of the initial costs associated with buying a new vehicle like taxes and the other hidden special amounts) Net comment: They might be a little closer than at first glance than people think....people ALWAYS forget about how much a day they pay in depreciation whereas the old Chevy...if kept up, probably goes up a buck day or more We have been 'uptrained' to consider gas mileage as being the major driver of automotive costs....but its actually not unless you are a long distance driver/trucker. Interesting thread guys!! and hey, nice Ochre Chevy All Good Coley

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Fortunately I'm not good at math AND I refuse to check the gas mileage on the old girl, so I don't believe a thing you just said! lol!

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
The gas money is well spent on a pleasure few can know. I regularly in nice weather do a 70 mile round-trip commute in my 71. Compared to my boring Subaru DD which gets 28MPG, the difference is a pittance compared to the feeling of rolling down the interstate in 2 tons of Detroit's finest iron!

Totally by accident I assure you. You've hear of a 20 footer right? Looks great from 20 ft away? This truck is a 200 footer...

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
By coincidence, I drove my recently acquired '67 GMC (picture of it when I first drove it home here ) 32 miles one way to work today! Based on that Madison County plate on the car next to your truck, we may have driven by each other (I work in Huntsville)!

At the instance of a co worker who rode to lunch with me, I went through a drive through car wash after lunch. It's clean for the first time in probably 20 years, but I think more water came inside the truck than outside! lol!! The pressure wash on the roof also knocked a ton of the weather seal out of the roof gutter...leaks like a faucet now. Time to add another repair to the list...

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Good for you. They need driven. I just brought mine home after sitting 45 minutes away since last September. I was really kind of nervous since it hadn't been driven that long but it fired up and didn't let me down. You gotta love these trucks.

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Good for you! These trucks need to be driven! I drive mine 56 miles a day!
If you think about it (to justify getting to drive a cool old truck every day)...if you lease or buy a new car for $300 a month that gets 30 mpg and drive it 60 miles a day, you're operating cost (fuel cost and payment) would be $440 a month (at $3.50 a gallon). And if you drive a cool old Chevy that doesn't get horrible mileage (mines been getting over 14mpg), it's actually cheaper. I took out a personal loan to get my truck and I pay $115 a month...and the fuel is about $300 a month...operating cost is $415 a month. The payment is so much cheaper that it more than offsets the fuel cost. It's all how you rationalize it! lol Chris |

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Or in the words of the Mastercard commercials of a few years back:
Restoration costs of the old C10 you dragged home from a farmer's field: $1000s more than you expected Gas for the C10 to get the 30 miles to work: $12 Feeling you get driving it: priceless |

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Lol! I think you guys think too much...so much math on this thread...my head hurts!!
I agree with whatever math makes it OK to drive my truck! The way I figure it...if I can't drive it I'm not going to own it!

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
This brings up the reason I'm seriously considering daily driving one of our trucks as soon as I can afford to buy one nearly done. The joy of driving is something you don't experience with new vehicles.
Plus, the original math completely left off the gas for the modern vehicle...some of the fancier rigs don't get any better mileage than our trucks do so fuel costs are a moot point. 500/month car payment x12months = 6000 per year to save or use to restore the truck. In 5 years you'd have 30k for that dream truck instead of a 5yr old tundra with almost 100,000 miles on it maybe worth 10k. 30-50 less a month in insurance (at least) x12 = 360-600 extra/yr (1,800-3k in 5yrs) for another toy for the truck. Add in the fact that I'm planning to use either a 350 with a 700r4 and 342 gears or a LS takeout engine/tranny and my fuel economy could be as good as any modern truck. Add in A/C, sound/heat insulation in the cab, new weatherstrip, and updated suspension and the truck can be almost as comfy as a new one. And of course, as mentioned, the older trucks will appreciate vs newer vehicles. I only buy used vehicles for that reason. Our family van (loaded honda odyssey touring) cost 49k new...we paid 10k and I expect to keep it for at least three to four years....putting 30-40k miles per year on it. Our last van cost 35k new and we paid 6k used and had it for 5 years, put $200 into repairs (a/c clutch so I replaced the compressor--not counting oil changes/one set of tires since all vehicles need those) Sold it for 1300 when it had a major engine issue. 4900 investment/63 months = $78/month for a $35,000 vehicle.

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
I gave up on calculating how many miles to the gallon. I have people tell me all the time how many miles to the gallon they get with their hybrid or what not and ask what I get. I always tell them I get more smiles to gallon than they will ever get. Ride on brotha. Enjoy that freedom of no payment.....except for gas.

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
Thanks. I was wondering where it was purchased but I can tell it's been on there for a while. I had one on all my 3/4 ton fords when I was running campers all the time. I still have my last one put up.
It wont fit my 71. |

Re: Drove the old girl to work today...
I didnt do any mathematical equations but i still say it is cool to drive these old trucks around with the windows down. Also, i park where ever i want and most people dont park next to me. I can also put full sheets of ply wood flat in the bed of the truck unlike some of dem der fancy suvs with plastic interior ( i know because i scratched my wifes kia sorento interior up before)
