Trying to assemble parts for my 4.8/5.3 4l80e swap, questions.

I'm trying to figure out the full list of things I am going to need so I have as much as possible before I yank the engine out of my 68 daily driver. If you see anything I'm missing, feel free to jump in and give me the heads up!

4.8 or 5.3 with full accessories and wiring harness (pedal and TAC module if DBW)
Motor mount adapters
F-body tank with homemade mounts using in tank pump, with new fuel lines including a return line.
4l80 with 6.0 flexplate
Fuse block and obd2 port for wiring harness
Radiator hoses
Wideband and o2 sensors
Exhaust
Intake tubing and air filter
I have hptuners so I will delete vats and swap segment for the 4l80e

I'm sure I'm forgetting things, if you happen to notice anything feel free to shoot me in the right direction!

I'm thinking the list is longer...but then again every build is not the same.

Curious as to why a 4L80e for a 4.8L? Are you planning to boost it or run lots of nitrous or something? Sure 4L60's break, and need to be built right to handle more power....but I wouldn't think an 80e is really necessary at the 4.8L level?

A turbo is on the list later on and have had enough troubles with 60's in the past to just do it right the first time. And thanks for the other items, I have an aluminum radiator I will tap the steam line into.

5.3/6.0 instead =-p granted the 4.8 can definitely make power but i believe through internet heresy that it will be much easier using those 2 lol

If I get a maf sensor with the engine I will run it, if not I will tune it sd only. When I turbo it I will go sd anyway, so its no big deal. And yeah, I will need a shifter and trans mount, good thinking!

Re: Trying to assemble parts for my 4.8/5.3 4l80e swap, questions.

I stumbled upon a killer deal on a 5.3/4l60e combo, as long as everything checks out I will be picking it up Sunday. I would much prefer an 80e, but for the price I will run it. What crossmember are people running on 60e swaps? I have a granny low 4 speed/350 combo right now so I know that won't work. I was thinking about hitting up junk yards for a th350 c10 crossmember and a tilt/auto column. Does anyone know if the auto columns for the 3 speed autos work for the 4l60e? I don't care if I can't drop it down into 1st, as long as I can hit p r n d. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Go to the how much does your ls swap cost thread. There are many parts lists with costs and part numbers.

Does anyone know if the 73-87 th350 crossmember will bolt up to a 67-72 frame without issue? They are a ton easier to get.

I used the trans cross member from CPP, it worked great! and it is cheap and I didnt have to crawl under a junk truck to get it!

Can you just buy the trans crossmember? The only way I have found it is with sbc engine perches and I don't need them.

Thanks, I just got home and found it on summits website. For some reason on my phone all I could find is the combo deal with the motor mounts also. I will go ahead and update my first post to show what is needed.

4.8's aren't a bad lil engine. Might is stock internals except for the LS6/springs/pushrods and I made 430 to the wheels through a built 4L80e.

Oh and the supercharger helped alittle.....

I have wanted a turbo 4.8 since I read about all the guys on performancetrucks.net getting a ton of power out of them.

but isn't that because they are cheap...and that after a while at 8-15psi or more of boost (probably from a cheap turbo system) does to an otherwise stock internal engine....so when they grenade it, and they will....they just get another one (for $500 or less) to replace it?

Yes and no. 4.8's generally live longer due to having the longest rod and the shortest stroke of ANY factory GM LS series engine. Because of the great rod to stroke ratio, the pistons aren't forced into the thrust side of the cylinder walls as badly and the rods aren't stressed as badly either. Plus the piston dwell is great, especially for a forced induction.

But believe it or not the 4.8 isn't super common, at least not compared to the 5.3 which has been built 2.5 times more than every other LS series engine COMBINED.
