Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Getting ready to have my exhaust pipes moved to rear of truck. Currently I have turndowns right at center of truck about right behind where the seat is. Dual exhaust with flow masters so its pretty loud and getting annoying especially when idling. Was wondering where most of you here route yours at. My wife's 77 has them right behind the rear tires which is where I think I want to put mine. Where do some of you have yours located and why?

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

I have duel straight pipes coming out the sides behind the wheels. Ive always perfered the look and I think you can hear it better than straight back under the bumper.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

I switched from dual rear turn downs to straight out the back and the cabin is quieter. I think dual rear exit sounds best from behind; stereo effect. Sometimes I prefer look of side exit but not the mono sound.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

I always liked the looks of the duals coming out behind the rear wheel, almost like a pair of pistols being held by Yosemite Sam!

I can't comment on the noise, my 82 has had straight pipes for years, since the fiberglass burned out of the glass packs about 6 or 8 years ago.

Then again I sorta like the straight pipe roar, but I live way out of town with no noise ordinance, and there is no way I'll drown out my neighbor's factory stock and its 400 + CUIN race engine he tests up his long drive LOL.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

They come out at an angle with a slight pitch down, straight pipe, no fancy tips just grey tail pipe, someone however removed any other devices that could choke the engine down but yea on cool mornings it will breathe smoke like a dragon.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Just trying to make up my mind on where I want them. I know depending on whether they are behind rear wheels or straight outback it will have a different sound. I kinda like the look under rear bumper slightly turned down and just barely showing the tips. Decisions decisions

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Here is my setup in my 79 SWB 4x4, had them come out behind the wheels, not a fan of straight out the back.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

That would work unless you still have the spare underneath, but after ripping the spare tire carrier off about three times we built a rod that holds it down flat in the bed of the truck, farm engineering at its best.... if you can't afford it, find what you have and make something, so i believe my lock bar used to be a piece of sucker rod from an oil well.

I have mine coming straight out the back. I love that look, and I didn't want them getting all crapped up by junk coming off of my tires.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

I had mine coming straight out the back. The only complaint was hooking up my trailer to tow while the engine was idling.

I also prefer to have a dual exhaust behind the rear axle. Best looks & sound combination, especially when you drive next to a wall or something

Now that brings back memories of my youth "cruising" downtown, letting the sound reverberate off the buildings.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Mine turn down slightly just before the rear wheels. I think this is factory on the 73 camper specials because of the placement of the actual over cab campers. Not 100% but I love the look and sound. Factory pipes/ mufflers are actually pretty quiet.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

I have mine out the back but slash cut down behind the rear bumper so they don't show. When I get my truck back from paint, I take a pick of it but its pretty explanatory

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Neat concept Bagged, too bad i dropped the 82 off at my muffler guy today, two new glass packs and a little bit of new pipe, hopefully he'll add more aluminum, and i promise not to pull out my bag of tricks to burn the glass out of the new packs

Other than that $100 for the set and a couple feet of new pipe, same guy who's done all the exhaust work on her.

Re: Preferred exhaust tail pipe location?

Well in the morning I'm taking it to my muffler guy to get mine extended from the center of truck with turndowns to probably right behind rear tires with chrome tips. Will take pics and post them. Also will film to hear difference
