I have the truck the guy lost the title and he changed cabs and it has the wrong vin I have known the guy and the truck my whole life and I'm wanting to put it back like it was

There should be a "secret" VIN stamped on the frame rail; top of the horizontal flange, passenger side, near the forward most box bolt hole.

The most legal way would be to have the previous owner file for a lost title based on the original serial number...as stamped in the frame.
You could then remove the serial # on the replacement cab and operate with only the frame serial #.
If there was an issue you could apply for a state assigned replacement serial #.
As far as I know it is a major offense everywhere to move a serial # plate from one truck to another.
It is a bit of a grey area if you took a complete cab that you had a title for and put that on the original frame....I do not think you would be prosecuted for that as you had not modified or drilled out the serial plate.
