1972 Antenna Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Okay, the antenna on my truck is pooched. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if reproductions are available or if I got one of a parts truck and being 40+ tears old would it work well. I guess I'm looking for experience and suggestions.

Repro's are available, I got one for my wrecker project but can't offer anything on quality as it's still in the sealed pack.

I think I got it a Classicparts.

I got a replacement from Brothers, I got the one with a solid SS shaft, good quality, looks good on. Would buy it again.

That's the kind I have too. I'm yet to find a used one that is worth installing. They're usually broken, hay bailed, or after market. Better to just buy a new solid mast one

I bought a telescoping one from LMC. Works great and looks original.

Depends on where you live. The telescoping ones get used for things other than reception! I had this problem in an area of S Dallas too.

Wow, as though those telescoping antennas weren't already doomed from every low hanging branch or 300 lb woman with large purse squeezing between vehicles at WalMart, now they're being broken off to be used as pipes for crack addicts. I'm so glad I replaced my broken antenna with a solid mast, even though it isn't technically correct for my truck. After all, a snapped off mast isn't correct either...

Ha! I live near Philly (near Camden NJ too) and haven't had that problem! The article was from 1997, so maybe they've moved on to better pipes by now. Then again, I don't tend to leave my truck (or myself) in neighborhoods where crack addicts hang out.

Not trying to thread jack.. but i was just looking up antenna post and low and behold here is a current one..

water is getting in to may cab where the antenna wire comes through.. how is everyone sealing this up?

I used latex caulk. The kind you use on a bathtub.

I don't frequent the crack addict neighborhoods but they will come out to you. That said, I have also heard the Brother's antenna works well and my store bought one works great as long as I am parked in front of the transmitter.
