Shouldn't Have washed it

Bought this '66 from a farmer today as a parts truck. I have never seen this color in person before, so I thought I'd clean it up to get a better look at it. Then I start to think to myself "this isn't that bad...it could be saved" and "that color is actually pretty cool". My question for you all is- when is a truck worth saving? I've seen some trucks on here that were parted and thought to myself "why", also seen some saved and thought "why". Well, for me on this truck, it will come down to the original (It ran when I parked it) 305 v6 being sound. This truck is completely stock other than the mirrors.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

Definitely looks like a keeper to me! We love pics, so please post more when you can. I've seen another on here that was the same color, but no idea where to find it.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

That truck is a beauty. I can’t believe how much the color changed with a bath. And it has all the deluxe trim around the side glass and windshield. I’d suggest those mirrors may be original to the truck. Other than the round mirror clamped to the arm, those are identical to the ones that were ordered new with my GMC. There were two when purchased, but one was flopping around so I took it off before taking the first photos:

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

That's no parts truck! And this is coming from a spoiled west coaster that hates rust! Plus, that particular GMC color is one of my favorites.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

Surely more pleasure in preserving than parting out.

Also you have a basis for reference as it evolves.

I suspect there would be many on here happy to work with that truck.

I wonder what the colour looks like in original form?

Hard to kill that 305. Mine sat for 16 years and it cranked and ran with nothing more than a battery. Even started on the gas that was in the tank!!! Lol

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

Keep it together! If it is a '66, there is a good chance there is a 351 under the hood. Scrape the pass side pad in front of the cyl head and read what it says.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

Thank you all for the input. My question, was more along the lines of what criterion others use when deciding to fix rather than part a truck? LT1, I was think the same thought about that color looking good two toned with white. I like the color more than my wife who said "If that's a factory color, someone probably lost their job".

Just having ALL the trim is rare in its self.

jbgroby, To save the 305 (it is a 305E) I think I'll need a pair of plaid valve covers, got any spares.

Nice truck
I'd verify all rocker arms getting oil.
Good idea to clean the sludge out of RA tubes before driving.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

That V6 is a dragon. The only way it won't start and run is if he dumped a coffee can of rusty nuts in the crank case and lit it on fire before he parked it. And even then it might surprise you. They don't really ever die, they just get replaced by kids wanting hot-rods.

As for saving the truck, my criteria is about the same as everyone else here. If you have an emotional connection to the truck then you should, no you MUST, save it! If you just look at it and see a pile of rust pits and endless labor toward no goal then part it or sell it to someone that will love it.

Re: Shouldn't Have washed it

Some 305 v6 have no oil filter bypass so it is a good idea to have oil psi gauge.
Especially if filter/filter housing has no bypass.
