got my engine
OK, so i picked up the engine im hoping to run in my 48 GMC pickup but its a completly different route from what everyone always takes. I'm a fan of the oldsmobile big blocks so i snagged up a 66 oldsmobile 425 Big Block and trans that supposedly runs. these engines are a shorter stroke and make amazing torque factory specs for the engine was 385HP and 495 ftlbs of torque so now my question is this engine is almost 26" outside valve cover to outside valve cover they are super fat engines... is this gonna fit? also i know the engine needs a decent rear end to support the power any ideas that would fit the 48?

I don't think that they are any wide than a big block Chevy when you get the tape measure out. From outside of exhaust manifold to outside of exhaust manifold I would bet that they aren't quite as wide. If you run the stock steering you will probably have to offset the engine to the right side and most likely find an exhaust manifold that will clear the steering although the stock manifold may clear better than the headers on the truck that is in TJET's photo album.
Having had a lot of Olds engines that were 72 and later over the years ( I still have two stashed away) I would suggest changing the timing gear to a steel gear and checking the bearings before I installed it. You could probably modify one of the "universal" crossmembers with tabs for the Olds mounts and have the engine bolt up pretty easy. Take a look at Anchor 2328 motor mounts as they are pretty simple.

It will fit easy - if a 392 hemi will fit -( dont ask me how I know this ) -anything will fit .Lol

Thanks guys, slowly getting it tore down, I'm gonna do a complete gasket set and all new bearings and oil/water pump just to get it out of the way and make it more reliable. Figured out today the trans is a TH400 don't know a lot about them are these good trans? And should I do a full over rebuild in it too?

4oo 's are good trannys from the old school - i would rebuild it just to have piece of mind .- you may also want to think about a 700r4 for a bit better gas miledge .
i am sure others will chime in just my 02cents worth |

just an update got the engine completley disassembled and degreased as much as i could, everything internally looked great minus one valve had a small crack around the head of it but no damage to the seat, also im pretty positive this thing had the original valve seals on it they were beyond destroyed. did a quick self measurment on the bores and its showing an average bowl of about .004 which i dont think is terrible but definitly on the looser side, would you recommend getting it overbored or could i run some moly rings and forged pistons with a fresh hone??? going to attempt to do an electrolysis bath on the heads as i can rebuild them myself remove some rough casting and port match but i will have the 3 angle valve job done since im gonna put in new valves. ill see if i can get some pics up soon.

Your this deep in it now, why not go ahead and do it right , Bore it , new guides, hardened seats, 5 angle valve job, port match, Roller cam. Heck its only money.
