81 Gmc 3/4 4x4 fuel pump? Possible purchase.

So my partner at work told me that his dad has a GMC 3/4ton 4x4 that he's looking to sell and at a price that makes me interested. He said that it needs a new submissable fuel pump. Don't these rigs have a mechanical fuel pump on the block? Or do you think he's referring to the duel tank selector module?

For the price id get it for I can afford the time and small parts to put into it.

I'm told its got a good body, single cab, long box, 350 and small lift. Should have more info and pics on it soon. What so you guys think it would be worth to sell later? Ballpark idea? Thanks guys.

maybe he means the float assembly in the tank.. those go for about $30 the fuel pumps that go on the block go for about $20 I think I paid like $47 for the valve underneath for the dual tank and if the switch was bad that was real cheap too

I was thinking the float as well. But that wouldn't keep it from not running correct? He didn't say if it was running or not. And I have the switch and valve from my 78 Partout and a mechanical fuel pump is no biggie for me. Just never done a float assembly before.

Okay we'll I talked to him today and says it doesn't run. So sounds like its gotta be the pump, dual tank selector(if equipped), or the float? But the float shouldn't cause it right? He kept saying its a submersable pump. He should be getting me the vin tonight so
Ill be able to look in to all the fees etc.

You have to look at it. Unless he converted it to fuel injection, i got $100 that says its not submersible.

I would at least take a little gas and see if it will fire, I also bet that unless some one did some kind of conversion then the pump is mechanical. If it fires with a little fuel down the carb all is well.

Asked him and he said its still carb'ed. He says that his brother is saying its a submersable pump.. I'm putting my money and hopes on that's its just a failed mechanical.

Re: 81 Gmc 3/4 4x4 fuel pump? Possible purchase.

Okay so i talked to him today and got the Vin. Called DMV and all checked out, clean title and the registration will be cheap. All Checks out.

Also talked some more with him , and he thought about it and agreed that it isn't a submersible pump. He says it must be the mechanical or the dual tank selector. Oh and he also said it had a Targetmaster 350 in it. Any one have any experience with those?

Sounds like it may be a good deal to drive for a while then turn it for some quick cash.

Those engines are produced in Mexico and are now are the GM Goodwrench 350's, they changed in the 80's maybe? I put one in my 87 no problems. I have heard bad news and good news, but my Uncle ran them in a bunch of fleet vehicles and he liked them.

I would take a can of starting fluid and see if it will run for a few secs.If it does run then its a fuel problem if it won't then it could be worse. As far as what it could be worth depends where you live look around see what others like it go for.

Is there some reason that your not able to look at the truck? If you can just open the hood and see if the pump is on the side of the engine with the fuel lines hooked up, if they are just take the starting fluid like previously mentioned and shoot some inside the carb, if it does not start offer $500 less.
Hope it starts!

Target masters are just a "good" cheap rebuilt motor just like Sodell said. Most folks have no problems with them. I would certainly run one!

I do plan on taking starting fluid. I am able to go see it but I just haven't had a chance yet, it's an hour away from me and I just have to fit it in my schedule.

Well I bought it. Should be waiting in my driveway when i get home. Took a battery and some starting fluid with me and she started right up.

Body is a bit rough and the floor pans for some rust. But after I sort out the fuel delivery issue, through and old lift kit on it, some new tires, and a good cleaning I think she'll be a nice rig to drive around for a while them pass on.
