HEI Dizzy Woes

Hello,
I'm having a trouble with my new dizzy. I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I'm attempting to install a skip white dizzy with external coil on my 65 with a 283. I ran a dedicated power source to the ignition, new coil (resistance type) and 80 millimeter plug wires. Ran points with 32 degrees total timing (18 +14, vacuum & static, respectfully).

Advancing it out static around 8 degrees it idles rough, vacuum gauge osillates between zero and ~8. If I give it gas, it dies and sputs gas outta the carb. Any more advaned and the rpms oscillates so badly it dies after a few seconds.
Tard it out to 0 and it dies unless I put my foot in the gas and it runs okay at around 2k and up... But won't idle. I'm stumped.

Check to make sure your not out 180 out. Others will chim in I am sure with more soon, good luck.

Just to clarify, read what I mean, not what I write. It would only idle when RETARDED. When advanced- it wouldn't idle but if I give it steady gas before it dies, it runs okay...

A bit of history, this is my second attempt at a skip white dizzy. I had the exact same issues with the first one, sent it back. This one is just as disappointing. As an FYI, it wasn't out 180. Reinstalled the original points dizzy with the results one would expect--- twice (after the first SW was returned and the second let me down ).

It was a gamble that didnt pay out. I think I'll try Dave's next...

Please understand I see far more distributors in daily doings than most see in their life times, and see all sorts of different brands and models, defects and problems.

When I hear that a Skip White distributor is great, no problems, and that they are reported to be made in America, then, see more than a few of them in person, because they don't live up to the really attractive pricing, slick advertizing and hype, and, it looks EXACTLY like a PRO-COMP CHINESE unit, it forces me to believe it isn't what it is touted to be.

NOT vendor bashing here, just telling it like it really is, from someone with hands on experience, that sees this stuff every day, and fixes same.

Change ALL the electronics to better quality American made parts, and modify the upper bushing for correct lube, it will become a valid, useable middle of the road quality, real HEI level ignition.

X2!! There's a reason it's a $35 "dizzy" (whatever that is-never heard that term until here)

I'm a die-hard MSD user, just a preferrence for me only, always had good luck with them.

HEI451 knows what's up on electronic ignition, I'd take his advise anyday.

go with the msd streetfire distributor good price and works well this is what I have.

I am a firm believer in most, NOT ALL MSD products, and the Street-Fire ISN'T one of the ones I like. Their Blaster coils and Ready to Quit series distributors are not nearly as good as it should be for being marketed by a quality company like MSD.

The rest of their line is just plain top notch, the best you can get.

It seems no matter where I read posts about distributors, the "You get what you pay for" theme seems to be prevalent. And taking even disregarding 90% of the opinions out there, MSD high end products are just that, high end.
I know what I'm factoring into the budget on my build!

I've never tarded out a dizzy. Is that a normal procedure? Do you need "special" tools?

Like ones have stated, junk the trick module and use only the standard AMERICAN made module, thats what your problem is or the coil. Only 50,000 volt coils really exist, more than that is just a marketing lie. A stock 283 will handle 52 degrees all in at idle ( vacuum advance hose connected and connected to port vacuum ) with HEI dizzy, will help greatly on emissions. Check to see what your all in is after 3000 rpm, should not be more than 34 - 36
