Recommendations on a Fuel Tank '66 c10

So, I've looked through FAQ section 2b under mount tank. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=370496 I went through the post, looked at literately 20 different builds and styles and looks... but I can't really make out which is the best. I want to relocate the tank to back of my 1966 Chevy c10. But I have no plans on running a Roll pan or a bumper and I don't really want it stick down like the Blazer tank. I'm not sure i like how low the LMC replacement looks. also I'm not sure if these tank would allow me to still mount a hitch to the frame or not.


much later on i will eventually put air bags on the truck. though i will not be modifying the frame to make it slammed. just going to make it drop as much as it will stock.

is there a smaller tank or a better solution. It doesn't need to be 20gals i mean a 15 - 16 gal or in that range would be ok.

If the Lmc tank would work best for my application, or if you think it would. I think thats looks the easiest and cheapest. ill have to deal with the look.

any help would be much appreciated.

I am converting mine back to original behind the seat location. I hate the look of a tank hanging down in back and the truck just isn't made to have the tank there. Fuel filler is a problem.

I have heard a Fbody tank works well, has the filler out the back though.

With no rear bumper or roll pan, the tank is going to show- no way around it.
I am using my original '65 Suburban tank in my '65 LWB, so it'll only hang down as low as it did in the 'Burb.

You will still be able to mount a reciever type hitch, as they bolt up to the outside of the frame rails, or on the bottom of the frame rail.

I personally would never run another in cab tank again- after a close call in a wreck, just not willing to cover myself in spilled fuel if I cannot exit the truck.

Wow man that's a crazy. the tank being in the cab definitely gives me concern.. I have thought about just refreshing the tank in the cab with a new one but I'm not sure.

In LMC they have 2 different tanks now a 17 gal which is 1 in thinner than the 21 gal. but I'm not sure if 1 inch would really make that much of a difference.

I love working on my truck and fabing things up but this fuel tank thing im not looking forward too. its one of those times were I wish my uncle was Chip Foose. LOL

thanks for the input guys I think this will definitely help me make my decision for.

I went through this decision process when I bought my truck a few months ago. I decided to put it back in the cab as well. Brand new tank, sender, cab gasket, and cap.

I have everything bn in the box to convert back to an in the cab tank but now Tincan has me reconsidering. Darnitol! Previous owner has a Billy Jo Jim Bob fuel cell mounted underneath the bed that I can't wait to cut out.

bmur66 Don't get me wrong, I am sure they are safe in the OEM location- millions of trucks ran this way for alot of years.
BUT it's my preferrrence to not have my fuel tank there- I even started building my daily driver project with the original tank- but just coouldn't do it.
When the '66 GMC pictured was wrecked- we had just moved the tank a couple days before. I was at the scene about 20 minutes after the Mrs got hit, and they were trying to get her out. I know it's alot of "what ifs", but I took a long hard look at that truck after, and the exact location of the drivers' side of the tank would have been severely damaged, possibly split open in that impact, and she had no way of getting herself out- drivers' door didn't work, and she had a broken lt shoulder, 3 broken ribs,and a nasty bump on the head.

Not trying to pursuade anyone to do anything, simply stating my opinion and preferrence. Like I said, millions of trucks of all makes ran this set up for a long time, but they decided to move them for a reason, and I just do not like them there.

Tincan I value your input more than you know. I have been lurking and gathering info on these trucks for awhile now and some of your posts have helped me out. Your experience reinforces my concern over having the tank in the cab in case of an accident. The only think I like about an in cab tank is that it is a clean installation. A between the rails tank just seems to have too many problems but last night I got looking at Boyds tanks so......I don't know what way I am going

boyd makes a nice tank, a tad pricey but well worth it when it comes to quality and fit and finish.

I am very pleased with the tank I got from POL. It's an aluminum tank so I don't have to worry about rust issues and it doesn't hang down really bad like the blazer/sub tank conversions do.

just my two cents worth but i am deff going with the 21gal tank from LMC and thought about putting a flip door in my stepside fender behind wheel but now i dont want to mess with that. i found this pic of fuel filler on inside of bed here on another thread so think this will work for now...

I bought a truck with Edelbrock EFI. It has a 30 gallon tank in the bed which takes up a lot of space and looks bad. The EFI needs a return fuel line to the tank. Has any one used a stock tank with EFI? If so, how did you rig the return line?

The only way to run a return line in a stock tank is to remove your sending unit, get yourself about a four foot piece of steel line, bend it using a tubing bender to follow the contour of the out going line, drill a hole the size of your tube in the sending unit plate and insert the line so that it goes at least half way down into the tank, solder it to the the sending unit plate and reinstall sending unit to tank. Secure line to floor with a line clamp before exiting to the underside to prevent movement or your soldered joint may break.

Thanks for the detailed response...I may give this a try before spending the time and effort and $450 on an under bed tank.

If anyone needs a NIB cab tank, straps, sending unit, cover, cap, etc.. (every single thing needed was purchased from LMC) please PM me. You will save some $. I have decided that since the old tank saddles were ground out along with the strap loops and everything is covered with Dynamat, it would just be to much work. Cab is also freshly painted and someone did a nice job filling the hole. I also have a set of tank saddles that were removed from another truck if someone needs them.

Here some advantage to have under bed gas tank:
1) you use aftermarket fuel sending unit.
2) use aftermarket fuel gauge. ex. 0-90 ohms
3) 15-16 gal. Is small enough to get gas hose between frame and bed rails. Thus, u have enough gravity pull when u pour gas.
4) it looks cool

Also an aftermarket underbed gas tank can to use carburetor or fuel injection. IM using carb. Right now but in future I might get throttle injection
