Re: found me one

Kool, were you hoping for a 5 speed or the 540 allison, I like them both but it depends what you're doing. What kind of plans do you have for it? I think many had 465 four speeds also.

Re: found me one

Hoping for 5 and a 2 but the retarder pedal where the clutch should be is pretty neat.
Wife thinks I'm out of my mind.
She wants her 71 firebird done first.

If I get the little truck I'll freshen up the brakes drivetrain and tires.
Eventually paint it.

Re: found me one

Tell us more about the retarder, is it like a Klam electric retarder or something else. Maybe some pics of the pedal and retarder. Does it look like a factory installation or after market?

Re: found me one

Looks just like an Air Brake Pedal except for the word "Retarder".

OK, this is a new one for me. Is it something like a Jake Brake?

Re: found me one

I read somewhere that there might have been a retarder built into some allisons as an option. Is there a electric retarder somewhere in the drive line, it looks like a big electric motor, if not follow the pedal and see where it goes. I have never seen that pedal. If you buy it take the pedal off and look on the back to see if it has the Winters foundry mark cast into it, it will look like a big snowflake.

Re: found me one

That video was interesting, but it seemed pretty modern day. I believe your older model Allison will be of an earlier design. Wouldn't mind seeing a video of an older one in action.

Re: found me one

That Pedal was pretty popular in early and mid 60's trucks with Air Brakes although I am not real sure when they actually started and ended.

My '62 GMC 6500 had one.

Re: found me one

I think they quit using the cast pedal on air brakes in 71 or 72.

Re: found me one

They might have went that far on certain models, although my '67 GMC 7500 had different type with a Rubber Pad and my '71 9500 had the "Foot Type" Rubber Covered Pedal (hinged at the bottom).

Manual Juice brake truck. I didn't look for power steering. Its only 19500 gvw. Any one guess the year. I'm thinking 69/70.

Re: found me one

Remember.... this trucks GVW falls in the weight range of the Federal DOT laws even if its not being used commercially. Between 10K and 26k does not require CDL, BUT it traditionally will require a health card, DOT inspection, safety equipment, etc. If you live in an area the DOT likes to enforce the rules, brush up on them. One other note, the most incorrect advise I have ever gotten on rules and regulations was at a DOT inspection station.

Now with that said, I owned one with no inspection on it and most folks with these used as farm trucks never get hassled either. Just wanted you to be informed.

Re: found me one

I'll guess 1970,based in the clearance lamps. Definitely 69/70 (if those were changed),based on the fender badge and throttle linkage.

Was the retarder just on automatics? Maybe a manually activated device like the Duramax/Allison trucks do electronically now?

Re: found me one

The retarder is an Allison option from what I've read do far. As far as the pedals down I'm afraid it's broken

Re: found me one

The cast aluminum pedal looks like it came from the same foundry as the air brake pedal, this is the foundry that chevy uses to cast many of their other items like intake manifolds. This makes me think that retarder pedal was factory installed. Never heard of GM installing retarders in these factory trucks. Around here some school busses are required to run electric retarders in the steeper regions. Normally they install Klam electric retaders made in Spain. I had four of these but sold two and will keep last two, if you ever run an auto in the steep you would love one of these retarders. I'm guessing this pedal doesn't have anything to do with an electric retarder, the Klam uses a steering colum mounted four position controller. I'm guessing the 540 trans went bad and exchanged it for a non retarder trans.

Re: found me one

For anyone interested on the subject of electric retarders here's a few pics, this is a Klam made in Spain out of a school bus. Their made in different sizes and they are mounted just like a browne transmission. I'm saving my last two for special projects where I'll be using a 545 allisons. These can also be used on trailers, you take the trailer axle out and replace it with a differential and direct hook the retarder to the diff, strange, only in foreign countries.

Re: found me one

That's the one. I always thought it was strange that they didn't have a Rubber Pad for non slip purposes, but I never had any problems with mine. And I drove it many a time in wet conditions.

Re: found me one

From what I've read its mounted on the tail shaft and uses transmission fluid.
It was 100ish yesterday and covered in cobwebs. I'll get some pics next weekend.
