Dash Cluster Question
I recently picked up a couple of Dash clusters with the gauges. When I took one apart I seen the Tandem and Over Speed lights. What in the world are these what do they mean?

Re: Dash Cluster Question
Those are for big trucks-like C50-60 and larger. "Tandem" is for when you have both rear axles engaged(like on a dump truck or semi) "overspeed" is for engine speed or RPM, it comes on after a preset RPM.

Re: Dash Cluster Question
I have the heavy duty truck instrument panel in my truck and wired OVERSPEED to illuminate with the on position. According to the Data Book you could order the gauge instrument panel as an option instead of the standard issued light duty.

Re: Dash Cluster Question
I wired my overspeed light to come on with low oil pressure. I used a "T" fitting at the engine block and ran the oil pressure sending tubing to the pressure guage as well as the wire to the idiot light sender.
There should be no way to miss a lack of oil pressure. I also wired the tandem lock up light with my high temp sender. I used the idiot light sender in one location on the motor as well as the electrical temperature sender for my temp guage. Again, there should be no way to miss an overheated engine. Greg.

Re: Dash Cluster Question
Greg63, nice dash. Will that tach fit in a 63-66 dash? If so where did you get it?

Re: Dash Cluster Question
Thanks.
I suspect that tach would fit all '60 through '66 dashes, but some modification would be needed. I bought a vintage Sun tach, off of eBay, that was designed for steering column mounting (with rear cone and mounting bracket), removed the cone, bracket, front chrome bezel and lens. I was then left with the tach face and electricals. I trimmed away at the factory blank off plate from my tach dash until I could mount the tach into it, then attached it to the cluster. Wiring was power, ground, light from what I recall (no transmitter neded like some original '60 - '63 units). Sun made 0 - 5,000, 0 - 8,000, and 0 - 10,000 rpm units in this configuration. I would have preferred an 8,000 rpm unit but I got what I got. Seeing as Sun made the tachs for our trucks, the size and sweep is correct as is the font on the tach face. You just have to get creative to get the column mount units to fit our dashes (or wait for a '60-'66 specific unit to come along). Greg.

Thanks. I was just thinking that it would be nicer to have a tach that went to at least 8,000 since it would not be too hard today to peg out a 5,000rpm tach with a little gas pedal. |

Re: Dash Cluster Question
I know I haven't had mine to the half way point (yet).
