8.1 vortec?
What would it take to drop one into my '78 ( it would replace a 454)

A lot of bravery. Everything I've heard about them is that they are grenades.

Re: 8.1 vortec?
I have one with almost 300k that says different. 8.1 is **** on gas mileage but makes up for in power and reliability. The reason they are not that common of a swap is because they are not that common.

Re: 8.1 vortec?
Yes, one of the oldest, most time tested engine designs on the road from GM is a granade...... Its funny but I hear this from time to time on forums for just about every motor GM has put out in the last decade.

Re: 8.1 vortec?
They just about bolt in from the threads I have read.
It wouldn't be my first choice as they are sort of un-loved, but it is a solid motor. Plus I feel it is better then the 6.0 for the 2500/3500HD's. When I was considering a Big block I was thinking of doing the vortec head swap with a decent cam. |

Re: 8.1 vortec?
the only thing bad about an 8.1 is the mileage. love them.

Re: 8.1 vortec?
Almost everything you ever wanted to know about an 8.1L in one thread. I got tired of the numerous PM’s and emails and started a dedicated thread on a reliable forum
