A Truck Named Cletus

This is a story of an 87 1/2 ton Silverado 4x4: Cletus was a one owner truck in the CA valley driven lightly and garage kept for 25 years. My buddy bought this truck for his 17 year old granddaughter so she could have a safe and reliable ride for her last year of high school. She named the truck "Cletus" which is defined in the urban dictionary as a hillbilly. The problem was that she was a redneck cowgirl that liked to party and go 4 wheeling. She wrecked the truck. So we scrounge up a front bumper, right fender, and a passenger door to repair the damage. Well, before we can fix the damage, she wrecks it again. This time she slammed Cletus into an oak tree and bent the frame beyond repair.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

I have another buddy that was looking for a project truck so I worked out a deal for him to get Cletus. I have all of the parts needed to save Cletus...frames, front clips, bumpers, etc. He spent about 2 weeks tearing apart and putting it back together using my 81 frame that had a 4" lift on it. He decided to go with the 87 suburban front clip to keep the same look instead of going with a 91 suburban clip. I now feel that Cletus is in good hands as this guy will baby him and take good care of him. Yesterday, he drove Cletus back to Oregon and got 18 mpg with the 5.7 tbi.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

Against my wishes, My buddy bought her another truck...a super clean 78 GMC 1/2 ton short bed 4x4. I had a 77 3/4 ton 2wd Chevy that I wanted her to drive. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

Thats a very nice GMC!!!! Be a shame to see a old beauty like that to get the fate as Cletus. This is why I think kids should buy their first car; may not be nice but itll get you around. Gets you some respect on how the world works when daddy doesnt support you anymore. Not dogging your buddy in anyway just saying....

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

My kids get one. They tear it up I put the insurance money in my pocket and they will buy the next one out of their pocket. I can understand getting the kid back in the saddle so they don't get gun shy behind the wheel but to buy another nice truck is just asking for trouble this time. I would have bought her a small car so she can learn to respect the vehicle. I see the spoiled brat thing going on here but hey, it is his kid his decision. Hopefully she does not tear this one up and hurt herself or someone else. Very nice 78 btw.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

This 78 GMC is her last chance. If she wrecks it, he collects the insurance and she walks.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

Those are both nice trucks. I would have bought her an s10 blazer or something like that and not a classic truck like those. I did buy my oldest daughters first car (97 gran prix). She pays for all the parts, fuel, anything it needs. Insurance included. I will make the repairs for her as long as she pays for it. This has taught her a great deal. She respects the car because she knows that it comes out of her own pocket.

Re: A Truck Named Cletus

My buddy has dealt with these trucks for many years and believes that she is safer in a square body truck than any car. That being said, I would put her in a 3/4 ton long bed with a 250 6 cylinder.

MY first car was a 77 Impala I bought from mom and dad for $200. I paid for all repairs and insurance. I hate people that coddle thier kids.
