Transfer Case ID - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 1969 GMC K25 that I believe has a 400CI small block with a TH350 transmission. I know it isn't stock, the VIN says it came with a 305 V6 with a manual 4 speed on the floor. I am trying to figure out how to shift the transfer case. It just has one lever (the Hurst). This lever shifts from H to N to L, I think. I can crawl underneath and move the other lever manually and it takes it out of 4WD and the other way (it only has two positions) is 2WD. There is no tag to tell what transfer case I have, but I think it is a NP205. According to the numbers on the front of the block, the engine came from a 1978 Chevy 4X4, so I'm assuming the transfer case came from the same. Can someone tell me for sure which transfer case it is and what's up with the single lever shifter?

I'm not sure but looks like the new process 203. But I don't remember two shifter arms. Those were also the full time 4x4 and a lot of people put part time conversion kits in them

X2 looks like NP 203 to me.

So, apparently, I have the part time kit, because I also have lock-out hubs. Does anyone know the shift pattern?

Don't quote me on this, probably should google and look for instuctions for conversion kits but i believe originally it was starting close to dash-4 lo lok, 4 lo, nuetral, 4 hi, 4 hi lok closet to the seat. I dont remember after the conversion, I think the loks went away. hope this helps

The way the shifter is now, all the way back to the seat is H, up one notch to N then L. There are only 3 positions in the shifter. I have to crawl under the truck and pull the other lever to change from 2wd to 4wd.

Sounds like the shifter has a problem, I googled the 203 transfer case and there is a lot of info out there. You should google it, I would see if there is shifter repair info as well

I'm 99.9% sure its a 203 and from what I was reading it probably has the conversion kit in it. Usually front locking hubs indicate the kit installed. I just don't understand your shifter with 2 arms. If you have to move one from under the truck that tells me Shifter problems not t case problems. If it were me I'd be looking for a shifter or if the budget allows convert to a 205t case.

You're not saying I have the factory shifter, are you? It says Hurst on it. I'm assuming they threw a shift lever from whatever they had nearby?

Thank you, Ol Blue and kwmech. This gives me more to go on. The thing is, I've never had a transfer case or shifter like this, I'm just wondering if I am not doing something right. I've had 4 or 5 4wd's in my life and other than the new ones with electric shift, it's always been straight up and down shifting for the transfer case.
