How low is my truck?
Hey guys, I bought a 72 C10 in a few weeks ago. The truck is kind of rusty and a little rough, but I think overall it is pretty solid. It is an original red and white Custom Deluxe, and it originally had the gray plaid seat, the white or parchment door panels, and the white seatbelts. It also came with a tilt column and a black dash pad. It does not say Highlander on the spid, but on the owners manual that was with the truck, the owners name is handwritten in with a note that says 1972 red Highlander.
It has already been to the mechanic shop for a full brake job and it had the gas tank flushed. I have it home now and am starting to drive it. The truck has been lowered by a previous owner. The mechanic noted that it was lowered with springs, not with drop spindles. The truck rides good, and the mechanic said the springs were not cut. My question is, how do I tell how much the truck has been lowered? It has tiny tires on it. The wheels are 15 inch rallies, and the tires are 215 – 60 size tires. I am not sure if I want to keep it lowered, maybe lower the rear a little more to level it out, or return it to stock height. I think I will probably leave it alone for now, although I plan to get normal size tires, something like 275 – 60s. Right now, it is around 12 inches from the ground to the center of the center cap, so the tire is approximately 24 inches tall. It is 27 1/2 inches from the ground to the top center of the front wheel well opening. It is 29 1/2 inches to the top center of the rear wheel well opening. Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy post. Any help will be appreciated. Mike Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: How low is my truck?
I would get the "normal" sized tires on it like you said before you do anything. That will actually take her up a bit and fill in the wheel wells. I run 235/75/15's on my truck @ stock height (factory springs, so she's probably sagged an inch or so over the past +/-45 years...)
It actually looks like the ass could come down another inch.

Here are three more pictures. The first two are of the rear end, and the third one is of the front suspension.

Re: How low is my truck?
Those look factory to me. Those tiny tires will make a vehicle appear to be really low. I remember when they were a HUGE fad in the 90's... I HATED it. At least yours didn't come with the go cart rims that stick out past the body 6 inches.

Re: How low is my truck?
Thank you for the quick reply, Jesse. Your truck looks really sharp. My oldest son is 13 and he loves blue trucks so we are considering painting our truck blue when we get around to that step. When you have a moment, would you mind taking a measurement on your truck from the ground to the top center of the front and rear wheel openings? Also, a measurement of the height of your tires would be helpful. That way I can get an idea on how close my truck is to stock. Thank you for your time.

Re: How low is my truck?
My 1970 gmc was 32.5" front and 33" in the rear before I lowered it. It was a pretty tall truck. Almost looked like a 4x4 with the big 235's on it. It's bagged now but my ride height in front is 26" normally. All the way down is 23" I think.

Re: How low is my truck?
No problem and thanks! It's a mid 90's GM medium blue. I have an addiction to blue... that truck is blue, my 00 Z71 is blue, my wife's 11 mustang is blue, and my 65 mustang is Wimbledon white with a blue interior. When my 67 firebird ever gets started it will someday be white with blue stripes and blue interior as well.
My truck is really close to the one above. My tires are 235/75/15 and are 28.8" tall according to online calculators. The front is approx. 31.75" off the ground and the back is approx. 33.5".
