Mickey Thompson STZ or BFG All Terrain T/A KO?

I've been looking at tires online and am torn between the M/T STZs, and the BFG All Terrain T/As. Have any of you guys used both? Which one do you recommend? The truck will be mainly used on the street with the occasional foray into the mud.

Re: Mickey Thompson STZ or BFG All Terrain T/A KO?

I had these tires http://www.intercotire.com/tires.php?id=12 before i went with BFG AT's they are called TrXus StS's they are good for sand and street they are by no means a mud tire, BFG AT's probably aren't that great per say in the mud because they won't clean out a lot of people end up buying mud terrains for street/mud use, i just ended up buying more trucks to fit all my needs lol

i too can't say anything 'bout the STZ's, but i had BF AT's on my truck for 12 yrs (dont care about tire dating, when you got 50-60% left, aint tossing them). hard wearing, great in snow, not so great in mud. running BF MT's now for 3 yrs (buddy bought the tires in 2001, then parked the truck. i now own 10yr old new tires), just like the AT's, but better in the muck

You guys changed my mind. I was leaning towards the M/Ts, but I went ahead and bought the BFGs. I'll post some pics once I get the 31x10.50x15s on the '68. Thanks for the advice.

BFG AT's are great for dirt, but pack up in the mud.
Where I live, mud is not a problem. Just dry stuff.

They are great tires, long lasting if taken care of, quiet, and work great off roading in the dry climates.

Been running BFG AT's for many years on my light and heavy 4x4 trucks.

Re: Mickey Thompson STZ or BFG All Terrain T/A KO?

If your truck is not really heavy (like a cummins 3/4 ton) I've found that mudders are usually worth the extra money because they last longer than street/AT tires. They usually put off a little extra tire noise, but other than that, a modern MT radial is pretty easy to live with.

My whole family has been running Maxxis Buckshots for years. They are quiet and they last longer than a street tire IMO.

My K10 is getting TSLs though

Re: Mickey Thompson STZ or BFG All Terrain T/A KO?

When i got my 04 2500HD CC 4x4 from factory, had dealer install Bridgestone Revo's on it. They looked cool and had good reviews on line. They were junk!

Lasted about 40k and they were done. Dealer talked me in to BFG AT's and they are fantastic! I've got 60k on them and they still have tread to spare. Quiet on highway, great off road. I'm not a mudder, so really can't give you advice there.

My 72 K-20 has old BFG MT's (old and cracked). They are noisy.

I think you made the right choice.

I have to commend you on getting 33x10.5 and not 33x12.5. The 10.5's have a higher load and max PSI, therefore much better road and stability manners.

Re: Mickey Thompson STZ or BFG All Terrain T/A KO?

The BFG A/T are rated at 50,000 miles. My Durango has put over 60,000 on this set and I still have tread. I most likely will need to get new tire before winter, but that will be another 5,000 miles or so. So I would say tread wear is great. My only real problem is I found that my tires, or at least one tire, had a hard time keeping balanced. At some point I stopped ratating the tires just to keep the smoother tires on the front. And I STILL got great tread life!

The previous tires were Pro Comp A/Ts. No problems, smooth good riding tires but short tread life. The rating was 40,000 miles and I got about 38,000 miles.

Just my thoughts.
