one wire alternator...
The alternator on my truck went bad. Thinking about going to a one wire. What alternators have you guys used and where did you get them? Thanks...

I bought a one wire at a local parts store because I didn't have time to wait for a mail order. I was one of the best things I have put on my Blazer. No more problems and I they are easy to hook up due to the one wire. Oh, I think mine was a CSI brand.

Just use the standard GM Delco late model internally regulated alternator, that's all you need. If you are interested, I have the adaptor plug that makes the changeover very easy, PM me if interested.

i got one from a late 80s(??????) Buick from the local Napa. i just had the parts guy go through the books and found the highest amperage one he could find. It ended up being a 95 amp, and I didn't have to pay the extra money for those high amp ones. it's not a one wire, but hooking it up isn't hard at all.

I bought and am using a one wire alternator. I have been running it now for a couple of years and love it, no worries about additional wiring failures, and makes for a very simple clean install and look.
Hence, On the other hand, if you have alternator bracket problems or a single belt running fan, alt, water pump with a factory a/c equipped cooling fan, you may get startup squeal, other than than, DO IT. |

I put in the Autozone 104 amp special. It is for a mid-eighties Olds Toronado #DL-7294 (12-SI alternator) and rewired the truck. Direct bolt-in and no more problems...Alot cheaper than the "one-wire" units. Besides, it has a lifetime warranty and can be had from coast to coast if it ever fails. See if you one-wire guys can have that peace of mind. I just feel that the later model internally-regulated ones are the way to go.

Alright now I am confussed my truck 68 has the stock externally regulated alternator. So the single wire is internally regulated is the others mentioned on here also internally regulated? I really need more amps than the stock one I am sure. I am adding FI and electric fan stereo .... So what am I missing? I know this has been talked about on here but without the search it is hard to find.

Dave, if you want something that will confuse you even more(I know I am VERY confused about this), there are some 3 wire alternators that are internally regulated. If someone can explain that one to me I would appreciate it.

Alex, it is a very easy modification to the existing system. The newer alternators are internally regulated so you must take your external regulator out of the system. I have the instructions if you like.

I put a Power Master in mine. It is an 80 amp at idle and 140 at higher rpm. I needed this much amperage due to my dual electric fans and electric fuel pump.

To change to the newer style, internally regulated alternator, all you need is the alternator, the 2 items in the following pic, and 30 minutes or less of your time. This is a very easy upgrade if you have the right parts, I used this on my truck 3 years ago, and have never had a problem, I highly reccomend it. This plug wires into your existing alt. harness, and the jump wire is used in the plug off of the old voltage reg. It is easy, quick, and a worthwhile upgrade.
