question about 283's...
Obviously a 350 or larger cubic inch motor producing more torque would be better performance wise for a c10.
But how about a 283 for a daily driver/cruiser?? Reason I ask is I have the chance to acquire one for practically nothing thats been rebuilt 15, 000 miles on it/complete .person swapped to a larger cubic inch performance motor . This is my first c10 so I have no clue how these trucks run with a 283 Figured some guys had run one . Just didnt know if dumping the extra $$ into a crate motor would really be worth it if im selling the truck in the near future. Although it seems like a brand new motor would be a feature thatd set it apart when it comes time to sell . Posted via Mobile Device |

I agree. The 283 runs plenty good. We ran then back in the 50,s all day long.

they came in these trucks so i see no problem, there are different good motors my dad had one in a 67, i would take it over a 350

Great motors. We all just got spoiled to all the torque the 350 and larger engines produce. I have thought about dropping one in my 79 Malibu with the 200 4r od and 3.73's. car originally came with the lame 267 v8 and 2.29 rear gears(!) i was on a budget and first swapped in 3.42 gears into the 7.5" rear. That helped immensely. Then swapped the th200 for the 200 4r. Night and day. The 355 swap made it another car entirely. The 383 was out of this world...til it self destructed.

Awesome, my truck I believe has 3.73 gearing out back. So it might work well with a 283
Maybe I will try and find a cheap used tranny from a board member to go with the 283 overdrive would be nice but I could live without it too. My dads old el camino had a 283, ran great .just didnt know if the c10s extra weight would be an issue, sounds like it wont. Posted via Mobile Device |

Nothin' wrong with a well built sbc. Here's one turning 10 grand. I've seen and heard them turn 11,500 rpm.

I had a '69 stepper a few years back that was an original L6 /3OTT/ 3.73 truck, and somebody had put an old 2 barrel 283 out of a '58 Impala in it. It still had the phillips head timing cover and valve cover screws, and the wire clamp distributor hold down, with the original breather. That old engine ran great in that truck and would smoke the tires in first, and would chirp 3nd with authority. I never got a fuel mileage estimate, but from driving I could tell it wasn't too bad on gas.

Put that 283 Crank in a small journal 327. YeeHaa.... a screeming little 302! Not worth a damn in a utility use truck, but man what fun above 6 grand
283's are great little motors. Like was said earlier, we are spoiled buy the torque of 350's, 383's and 400 skinnies.
